I have also tried some new ingredients in my beers one of which was a heavily peated whisky malt which came with a warning from the maltster " be careful it's very smoky !" . I added some to my Historic Porter recipe and it worked really well , every pub that had it asked for it again , one pub took 3 casks !
In 2023 Bowler's acquired the brand and recipes for Hopshackle Ales. Hopshackle’s multi-award winning real ales were produced from its brewery in Market Deeping. Upon his retirement, the previous owner wanted a ‘safe pair of hands’ to entrust the ales that had he had developed over the previous 17 years, and we are delighted to continue the Hopshackle legacy.

Bottle shared at the Scopey 5K tasting. Picked up at Kris Wines way back when. Pours clear gold with a frothy white head. Dried fruits on the nose with sturdy, bready malts as well. Medium to big sweet flavor with rich malt structure, lots of ripe fruits, dates, bread. Full bodied with fine carbonation and lightly oily texture. Moderately warming on the finish with rich and bready malts, heavy sweet fruit cake, toffee, aged fruits. Lovely. Great balance. Has aged quite well.

Cask, gravity at Derby, Roundhouse, NWAF, Saturday 22nd February 2014 in company of Loz, dad and Pauline. Pours straw/light gold clear as yer’ like. Little bit of malt and interestingly a little touch of cheesiness. A tickly gentle bitterness its a bit malty perhaps but very fresh. Nice little tang at the end, its little dry, a nice beer. Gravity cask at the CAMRA NWAF ’14, Derby. Very dark brown, almost translucent with a wispy beige head. Scent of astringency, malt of seawater. Taste is sweet with a bitter interloper burrowing through the taste buds. A crisp and refreshing strong ale.

Cask, gravity at Derby, Roundhouse, NWAF, Saturday 22nd February 2014 Pours black with barely a bubble to be seen. Really chocolatey, really chocolatey but good quality dark Belgian chocolate. Wonderfully hoppy with a great bitterness thats tempered by the chocolate. Nigel has done another cracker here, great beer. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 3.9

Cask @ NWAF ’14, Derby. Dark gold. Grassy, sweet shop (barley sugar) aroma. Heavenly sweet taste punctuated by alcohol. Nice sticky palette. This is a tasty beer that’ll knock you out and is well worth the state it’ll put you in.

275ml bottle [#918 of 1300]. Clear, reddish, dark copper colour with late awakening, small to average, creamy, fairly lasting, ochre-beige head. Moderately sweet fruity aroma, notes of raspberry and other red red berries, cherry, background-ish caramel and toffee. Taste is moderately sweet malty, notes of caramel, toffee, fruity interludes with hints of plum, cherry and red berries; soft, sticky palate, oily texture. A wonderful sipper with flattering sweetness and softness. Would have stored some more if I’d had the chance - and if I’d known duly.
