Around 1980, a desire for a beer brewed `to medieval tastes´ led us to the Cruydeboeck (“Book of Herbs”) by Belgian botanist and physician Rembert Dodoens (1517–1585). The road to actually realizing this desire was long, but following a detour through a (then) small Walloon brewery in 1988 we arrived at our first “garage beer” in Beerse (province of Antwerp). On 23 November 1996, the “Proef” brewery in Lochristi bottled the first 1,000 liters of Gageleer. In 1997, five members of De Wielewaal nature society raised the capital to found a co-operative, with the goal of marketing a beer to fund the purchase and conservation of nature reserves in the Campine.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Roodbruin helder bier met stevig beige schuim. Aroma is kruidig. De smaak is zoet, kruidig en ook fruitig. De kruidige smaak blijft even hangen.

Pours hazy blonde, small white head is consistant. Smell is tart, wheat, dry, almost like a berliner weisse. Taste is tart, sharp, very dry, lemon-like sourness and astigency, even lemon-ish taste. some wheat, which finishes very nicely in the aftertaste. pretty sharp and dry. Not a bad beer at all, and certainly different. A bit to dry for my personal liking though.

Bottle at home. Pale yellow color, white head. Not much aroma. Taste is good, a nice blond beer.

33cl bottle. A almost clear reddish golden beer with a huge most good lasting off-white head. Aroma of herbs, spice, red malt, soy. Taste of herbs, medicine, red malt, soy, caramel, dark malt, interesting!
