Aroma is sweet, caramel, grapefruit. Taste is like a hoppier dead guy. Maltier than the other APA, and less hoppy. Big smooth palate. A malty, less-citrus-y, hoppy taste. Very good beer.

Good chocolatey aroma. Very dark but thin appearance. Thin watery palate, worst part. Disappointing flavor - bit burnt, bitter, surprisingly tart, but not much there overall.

Very cloudy tan. Aroma is rich w bright citrus, overripe orchard fruits and a bit of chewiness. The taste is quite pronounced chewy, with light orchard fruit accents, a blast of alcohol late. I had hoped that one of New Zealand’s pre-eminent brewers would bring some subtlety and class to this style of beer, but alas this has all the subtlety and class of a grindcore band.

Bottle. Clear gold with a small white head, low bead. Aroma of honey, lightly spiced brioche-y dough, apricots, flowers. Lowish carbonation, but it works. A curious trick here is that it is very yeasty but the honeyed fruit flavours seem very clean - barely ripe apricots, some sweet oranges, hints of banana - and ring out very nicely. It’s very sweet but dries out quite a lot with very moderate spices and discreet bitterness. Alcohol is very well hidden. Bitterness and coriander creep up after a while in a dryish orange-tinged finish. Good. [3.7] Larger white head but it fades quickly. Fairly sweet and very fruity, fairly clean, hop aromatics, spices and bitterness at normal tripel (ie non "Belgian IPA") levels. Mellow and tasty.

Bottle. Black with an inch of tan head that settles to a cm. Aroma of treacle, mocha, passionfruit, red berries. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Not as sweet as suggested by the aroma. Light roasted coffee, berries, firm bitterness, a little ashy.

Peculier Pub, NYC bottle ($7): Pours amber with off-white head. Aroma is honey, malt, and a bit of hops. Taste is a light amount of bitterness. Some honey sweetness. Loads of biscuit and chewy malts. Easy to drink and sessionable. Very English IPA style. For Americans on either coast, this is pretty light stuff. Not bad though.

This is a ripping beer to look at but there’s something slightly wrong about the nose, with the smell of rubber reacting badly with the pine and some light nougat. The flavour is much more palatable, with lovely soft hops that provide a surprisingly tart lemon aftertaste. There’s a nice caramel nougat malt flavour with some spearmint residing in the back of the throat. This one’s just a nose clip away from perfection.

Bottled. A hazy golden beer with beige head. The aroma has notes of hops, malt, spices, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of spicy hops, malt, caramel, and herbs, leading to a bitter finish.
