Description
When good friends Ray Ashworth and David Crease got tired of the same old beers, they were determined to change things up a level. With a passion for homebrewing and creating authentic flavours, they became part of a new-wave revolution, handcrafting their own beers in the 1960s.

In 1981 they founded their own brewery near Norwich and moved to a converted farm complex in the picturesque Broadland village of Woodbastwick in 1989

Cask gravity at Bowl Inn, Charing, BF 2006. Amber colour with thinning off white head. Jellied fruit aroma. Good malt. Some hop. Juicy malt in mouth. Impressively not sickly or overly sweet. Very drinkable. I would say more a very strong bitter than a barley wine. Really quite dry on finish after sweetish mouthfeel. But it really isn’t half bad. Wouldn’t want the other half of this pint though if I wanted to cycle home safely.

Hazy orange amber ale with a thin white head. A herbal hops in aroma with coniferous notes. In mouth, a fresh alcohol menthol like quality, hops, and citrusy notes. Rich and smooth. However, not true to the barley wine style. Still, a good beer. Bieropholie imports 2006.

Dark clear brown with a few huge yeast chunks floating atop. Almost no head, and lifeless. A light murky malt aroma with nutty notes. In mouth, a roasted malt with notes of yeast, but no body, lifeless and sad. Bought from Bieropholie, for over 10$!!!

Bottle: Poured a deep slightly hazy copper color ale with a small bubbly head with no retention. Aroma is quite complex and hard to describe but I can pick up traces of vanilla and some subtle smoke. Taste is a well balance mix between some vanilla, caramel, very subtle smoke and some oak. Alcohol is well hidden and body is above average but not very full either. Carbonation is very low, almost like an old Thomas Hardy. Very interesting take on an ambiguous style (for me at least!) and I am very curious about trying some aged bottle in a couple of year since I believe age could do wonder to this beer.

500ml bottle from Pitfield Beer Shop. Black beer, with no head. Reall y nice aroma with molasses, choc and intense hop as well. Good in mouth. Again lots of molasses, dark treacle, coffee and hop dryness on the finish. Really good dark beer

Deep garnet body, thin/medium buff head. Earthy aroma with figs, caramel, musty cabinets, and toffee. Possibly a bit sulfuric as well. Sour body with light toast and notes of rubber/plastic. Very thin-bodied. Strange and not so good...I don’t think I’m going to finish this bottle.

A red-brown beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma has quite strong notes of alcohol, that are not hidden by the notes of wood and prunes, that it also contains. The flavor has strong notes of prunes as well as lesser notes of raisins and wood, the end is dry from both the alcohol and the wood. It has good body and really gives You the warmth.

Bottle Conditioned
Cloudy golden color. Very nice hoppy aroma, pine resins. The body is quite weak, dry, a bit sour; but it has a high hopping, aggressive, aromatic, metallic, with a pretty long final. Refreshing.

(Bottle 33 cl) Mahogany with a warm reddish glow. Delicious, creamy, light brown head. Dried, sweet fruit in the nose. Very vinous, port-like body with lots of dried fruit in the flavour and perhaps also a touch of chocolate. Soft mouthfeel, a little flat with a rather dry, short bitterness in the finish. 300605 & 110606
