Bereits seit über 475 Jahren wird hier am ehemaligen Steinweg, einer alten, überregional bedeutenden Handelsstraße, Bier gebraut. Eine der letzten von zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Straße noch nachweisbaren 22 Brauereien ist die Brauerei Spezial. Das Anwesen der Brauerei Spezial in der Oberen Königstraße 10 gilt als idealtypisches Beispiel für einen Braubetrieb des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Als Begründer der Braustätte gilt nach einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1536 der Büttner Linhard Großkopf, dessen Familie zu dieser Zeit noch mehrere weitere Braustätten am Steinweg besitzt. Der Name „Spezial“ taucht erstmals in Verbindung mit dem ehemaligen Besitzer Nikolas Delscher auf, der „Spicial genannt, eyn Bräuer und auch Büttner gewesten ist“. Er betreibt die Brauereigaststätte von 1631 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1664. Seit 1898 ist die Brauerei Spezial im Besitz der Familie Merz. Der Braumeister Christian Merz führt das Unternehmen also bereits in der 4. Generation.

On tap @Luppolo Station (Rome). Dorata viva, schiuma bianca media. Al naso sentori di malto, miele, panino al latte, pollaio. In bocca è dolce, con un bel gioco di malti, non spinge dell'amaro. Corpo medio, carbonazione media. Bella birra, ma mi aspettavo di più.

Bottled on November 13, 2017. As a blind tasting.Clear reddish brown color, off-white head. Malty, slight smoked, mellow scent. Malty, very lightly smoked taste. It is not over the top in your face kind of smoked beer, it has a delicate and nice balance to it. One of the best smoked beers out there, albeit far from the smokiest one. Great stuff. Medium mouthfeel, medium to medium low bitterness.8/4/8/3/15=3.8

500 ml from tap at Brauerei Spezial, Bamberg. Served in mug. Vibrant cloudy orange colour, full creamy head. Citric and floral nose. Elderflower, grapefruit and other citrus fruits and some yeast. Very balanced, hoppy floral taste, slightly bitter. Soft carbonated, creamy texture. Fantastic Zwickel.

500 ml from tap at Spezial Brauerei in Bamberg. Clear amber colour, small head. A bit reserved smoke aroma, citrus fruits, roasted malt. Bitter smoky taste, no sweetness. A bit watery texture and light bodied, Soft carbonated, easy to drink and very palatable. Refreshing!

On tap @ Brauerei Spezial, Bamberg. Pours cloudy orange, with a creamy, off white head. Aroma is phenolic, peppery weissen yeast, as well as smoked malts with bread and toffee. Creamy, smooth body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is smoked malts, with bread, toffee and wood, as well as some peppery, wheaty notes.

On tap @ Brauerei Spezial, Bamberg. Pours hazy yellow, with a small creamy head. Aroma is herbal hops, with grassy notes, as well as malts with bread and toffee. Full body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is zesty hops with earthy notes, as well as malts with bread and toffee.
