Description
De Halve Maan Brewing Company is a family brewery in the heart of Bruges, Belgium. The brewery was restarted and refined by Veronique Maes in 2005. With unique beer recipe on the work, the brewery was renamed as ‘Brugse Zot’. Brugse Zot beer became the only beer that is personally brewed in the town center of Bruges. The Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik beers are two of the brewery’s finest types of beers. Straffe Hendrik beer is filled with bitter ale while the Brugse Zot is rich in fruity flavor along with different types of malts and hoppy aromas.

Bottle. Yeasty aroma, a little sourness. Some fruitiness. I seem to detect some sort of artificial cherry aromas?! Quite clear, brown colour. Fizzy light brown head. Dry, Chimaylike aftertaste. Peppery flavour almost burning my throat?! Also quite malty with some marcipan. Rough carbonation, needs a bit of a swirl to get it right. Big floaties in the bottom of the bottle.

Bottle 25cl. Blond beer, faint appley citrus nose. Slighly effervescent in mouth. Easy drinking beer, not too complex but pleasing enough. Well made with some sweetness and a dry hopped finish with some green apple bite. Nice beer

(Draught)Yellowish, whipped cream-like head, fast receding leaving some lace; clear pale orange beer. Very fruity & yeasty nose with orange & bananaesters, smells very young. Little spicey touch at the finish. Served way too cold Fruity but quite dry taste; use of white candi sugar obvious. Again, outspoken citrussy notes: orange, orange peel, even kumquat. Very dry beer, light, but the temperature is very misleading in this; probably much sweeter warming up. Still very light body anyway. Aftertaste has some light sourish pinch. Nice, reasonable try, but it could do with some extra malt.

(Bottle 25 cl) Pale golden with a tall, frothy head. Hazy with a distinct sediment. Some underlying sweetness well-balanced with the hops. Pronounced hoppy dry finish. Full-bodied with a fruity palate. Wonderful golden ale. 221293

Bottled 25cl (BB 09/2006)
Pale yellow, big cloudy white head, lace. Nose has hay, cardboard and hops. Flavor is malty, citrusy (lime). Finishes to bitterish hoppy aftertaste. Not very strong body. Ok brew but not a big source for inspiration.

An orange beer with a huge off-white head. The aroma is very sweet with strong notes of yeast, but also caramel. The flavor is extremely sweet - too sweet for me with notes of malt, straw and yeast leading to a smooth slightly dry end.

I had this at the brewry in Brugge after the tour. Pours a nice hazy gold color and a nice spicy scent. Flavor is very yeasty and thick. There is some fruity spiceyness in the end but nothing overpowering. There are better Belgians out there but the brewry and beer garden are a must stop for beer lovers.

On tap at the brewery in Brugge: Served in a trappist glass with a good 1 ½ inch of head with good retention. Aroma is very interesting with some sweet notes mix with a nice choice of malt. It seems that the beers from this brewery are way more interesting when drank freshly from the tap then when they are bottled and sent overseas.

Small head that laced the glass nicely. Clear amber color with an aroma of alcohol, wine and new heavy leather. Light body and soft carbonation. Nothing bad here but not much going on either.

Bottled 1998. This pours a deep ruby brown with a quickly fading head. Carbonation is low. The aroma is like a barleywine. Flavor is smooth malt caramel and alcohol. Could be a little more robust. Probably at it's peak.
