Medium brown colour. Fairly heavy vanilla nose...but not exactly evoking the ring-tailed lemurs of Madagascar. There’s some light chocolate notes in there as well. Heavy vanilla on the palate, with the slight toastiness of a thinnish porter. Not all that cohesive, either, unfortunately.

Bottle. Rich cocoa and vanilla aroma. Red brown, low creamy head. Very chocolatty. Full body, slick mouthfeel. Pure dessert.

Clean aroma with very little smell. No gunk on the bottom of this bottle, pours a dark clear root beer look. Little carbonation on the tongue. Rootbeer pop flavors with bitter ale attributes. Perhaps some roasted malt can be detected. Initially has an alky laced flavor about it but not anything near the apparent 7.5% listed here. Overall another spiced beer that leaves a medicine linger behind on the palate. (although this is in the ASA style)

Bottle. Pours a very dark brownish color. Aroma is quite malty and has a slight caramel hint to it. Sweet malts, caramel, and a small hop hit to it. Overall the flavor is decent, making this a pretty solid beer.

Sampler at Cardinal Liquors, Frankfort. Light vanilla nose that for once does not overwhelm the base style. Color, though, tends to the light part of the porter spectrum. The vanilla taste does outdo the porter malts for attention, though. But at least it’s pleasant and not overwhleming. Bitterness at the end seems to come more from the vanilla beans.

bottle - Pours cloudy yellow and really bubbly with a one finger head. It has a light hop and caramel malt aroma. The flavor is also pretty light and is led by the malts. There’s some mild hops and it’s a little thinner than I’d like. It’s okay, but there are far better pale ales out there. rerate tap at Breckenridge brewpub in Denver - much better on tap, some citrus, bitterness is on the upper end for american pales. 7/3/7/4/14. I’ll average that with my original rating.

bottle - An Old Ale? Really? Oh well, I guess it doesn’t really matter. It pours dark brown with a one finger, lingering head. The aroma is of toasty caramel malt. It has a sweet caramel malt led flavor with minimal hops. The body is light but not too watery. It’s a fairly good quaff.

bottle - Pours copper with a mild aroma of malt and citrus hops and a thin, lasting head. The flavor is moderately hoppy with a hint of alcohol and some light caramel malt. It’s a little thin. The flavor is nice though given that it’s unusually big (almost 8% abv) for an ESB, I thought the flavor would also be a little bigger. It’s alright and a little bit different take on the style.

bottle - Pours copper with a medium sized lingering head. It has a great citrus hops aroma. The flavor is big on the hops as expected and has enough malt to hold up to it fairly well. Medium bodied and strong, it’s not the best double IPA I’ve had, but it’s enjoyable. Admittedly I’m a big fan of the style.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel-amber color with a trace of a tan head. The aroma was sour, tangy, nutty, hoppy and a bit off. The flavor was sour, bitter, tangy and had vague bitter fruity hops. The finish was dryish, tangy and bitter. Substandard even for the style.
