Bottle @ home- picked up a six pack at Mr. B’s in Denver. Very uncharacteristic of me to pick up a six-pack of a beer that I haven’t previously tasted (update: I guess I tried it at the brewpub two years ago and gave it a 6/10), but I’m attempting to wean myself off of the $30 bourbon barrel such and such of the week beers. Their other products that I’ve tasted have been good, so I’m hoping for another winner here. On to the review! Hazy golden orange appearance with a creamy tan head. Spicy, sweet honey, potent yeasty, somewhat herbal/floral, wheat malty aroma. Nice so far. Tangy honey, somewhat dry, yet sweet and spicy yeasty, wheat malty, somewhat fruity flavor. A little cloying and the honey content gets a little old after a while. Not bad overall and honestly, I bet this could do well in a can and marketed at the summer, camping/boating/outdoorsy crowd. Nothing overly special but it is better than 90% of the wheat ales out there these days.

Bottle @ home. Pours a hazy, golden orange appearance with a big, cream colored head. A touch spicy and earthy aroma that is far more dominated by a nice grapefruity, sappy piney hoppy smell. A bit toasty malty, light toffee, mildly bitter, grapefruit, earthy, piney hoppy flavor with some resin and booze on the finish. Pretty decent brew at $5.99/bomber.

Bottle @ home. Cloudy yellow appearance with a very nice, lasting white head and good lacing. Fantastic appearance. Light lemon, a touch of coriander and spicy yeast in the nose but it seems fairly subdued for a double witbier, whatever the fuck that is. Refreshingly citrusy, spicy, somewhat bready yeasty, nice lemon and orange flavor with a light tartness on the finish. A bit of spiciness in the aftertaste. Nice beer that would probably be nice later this summer.

This beer is one of those bottles that comes soooo close to being excellent, but falls just short. The malts are semisweet and solid, laying a nice, earthy foundation for the beer, but the all-star lineup of hops never makes an impression. The citric and piney notes are subtle, too much so for such a heavy, caramel-leaning malt load. Still, I find myself continuously sipping this pint, so don’t take me too seriously. A nice mid-range red ale, between the horrific sweetness of the Irish Red, and the endless bitter hoppiness of the American version.
