Description
When the young Viennese banker Franz Schaup started brewing beer in 1858, he did not expect his small brewery to develop into one of the most successful breweries in Austria over the years.

In the meantime, the Zipf brewery near the Attersee has a proud 13 beers and 3 types of hops, the refreshment with hop lemonade for adults, to their range. A total of 170 employees work directly at the location in Zipf. They are the ones who ensure that everything runs smoothly every day and are responsible for a large part of the success of the Zipfer brand.

Despite the numerous technical innovations and a merger with Brau Union Österreich AG in 1970, the careful use of resources and brewing with natural hops were always in the foreground.

01/01 0.5 l bottle from Spar in Semriach. Let’s see this one...had pale golden body with tiny head disappearing quickly. Aroma of some malt, corny, little bit hopped, quite ordinary and so familiar. Flavor well balanced, bit tending to sweet, nothing much in here, but quite pleasant. Finish is medium long, just a bit sweetish. Could be somewhat more carbonated. Unlike "Medium" crap, this is really a beer, and let’s say fine for a pale lager.

01/01 0.5 l can from Spar in Semriach. Had pale yellow body with almost no head. Skunk from the rotten vegetables, fortunately weakly emerging from the glass along with rusty metallic aroma, quite similar to NA beers. Bit of that skunk is left inside flavor, but not as much as it would be with non-alcoholic beer. Metallicity still felt. Otherwise it was light bodied and if all what I said would be excluded probably just the water stayed. Finish short, empty, follows the flavor. I would compare it with something bit worser than Clausthaler I had day before, but that is NA. And it was fresh. Simply can’t get those rates, specially when comparing to some fine beers around.

Bottled (BB 09/2008)
Hazy orange color, decent creamy white head. Wheat, clove, sugar and coriander in the nose. Clove, banana and wheat in the herbal flavor. More or less ordinary witbier with some interesting herbs/spices added.

300ml vom Fass at Taverna O’ Christos in Wien. Crystal clear, straw body. Shy cover of white, lacing foam. Discreet aromatic nuances of hops and malts. Same goes for the flavour - it’s dry hopped with grapefruit hints and malts beneath. Good lager (04.12.2007).

Canned. Pale golden colour, small white head. Aroma is slightly bready and sweet malty with some hints of grass and hay. Flavour is malty and hoppy, and that’s pretty much it. Pleasant balance, but not very special.

Bottled(500ml). -Hazy orange/pale brown coloured, medium sized creamy head, light yeasty and banana nose. Yeasty and very fruity (banana and orange) taste with mild acidic finish. Typical Edelweiss Weissbier. Simple and easy drinkable brew.

Bottled(330ml). -New product from Zipfer. Pours a pale golden coloured with small soapy white head and dusty citric nose. Very sparkling. A little bit better than other ordinary Radlers, but also quite weak dry lemony taste with mild grainy notes.

0.5l bottle courtesy of and shared with ozujsko (thanks!) Poured a dark orange-brown colour, with a thick big white head that went away fast. The nose... big banana, cloves, some yeastiness. The taste is pleasant, bit yeasty... banana, touch of orange, and not much else. Not all that complex, but a pleasant, refreshing lighter hefe. I like this brewery.

(bottle) Clear, golden colour with a big foamy white head. Dusty, moderately sweet, soft grainy nose with nutmeg, cloves and faint notes of citrus in the background. Medium-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a sharp carbonation. Pretty one-dimensional moderately wheaty taste with very restrained fruit-character; slim and fizzy, slightly papery finish. Bland.
