Description
When the young Viennese banker Franz Schaup started brewing beer in 1858, he did not expect his small brewery to develop into one of the most successful breweries in Austria over the years.

In the meantime, the Zipf brewery near the Attersee has a proud 13 beers and 3 types of hops, the refreshment with hop lemonade for adults, to their range. A total of 170 employees work directly at the location in Zipf. They are the ones who ensure that everything runs smoothly every day and are responsible for a large part of the success of the Zipfer brand.

Despite the numerous technical innovations and a merger with Brau Union Österreich AG in 1970, the careful use of resources and brewing with natural hops were always in the foreground.

Bottle in Vienna. A clear weizen, rather pale in color. Clean and light-bodied, refreshing and nice, with bananas and other fruits, but without as much character as the hefe. A little like a Belgian wit without the spices. Good, easy drinking beer, but not overly special.

Bottled, in Vienna. A good color and head on this Austrian hefe weizen. Average aroma, not very fragrant, but there. Good wheat malt taste, although not really special at all. Rich malt, banana undertones, seems to me like a good, very typical hefe weizen.

Bottled. Hazy yellowish orange colour with white foamy and thick head, leaves nice lace. Aroma is wheat, some banana, citrusfruits as well as mild yeasty and spicy notes. Flavour is fruits, some banana, wheat and mild yeastyness. Not that sweet, which makes it rather enjoyable. Quite biting carbonation though, but otherwise nice.

Slightly hazy golden coloured body with a very thick white head that fades fairly fast and leaves a nice thin lace on the side of the glass. Aroma of pale malt, yeast, lemon, coriander seed and a touch of curacao. Medium-bodied; Spicey allspice, anise, nutmeg, cardamom and even cloves tucked in this - a strong spice character when the smell and appearance don’t predict the taste. Aftertaste shows the spice throughout with a good wheat/malt backbone, some yeast and a tiny bit of curacao and lemon sweetness. Overall, a good beer that probably would show well on a mountain after a day of skiing or even on a nice summer day. I definitely liked this and would recommend it to others to try! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from the LCBO in Toronto (Summerhill), Ontario, Canada on 11-October-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 21-January-2010.
