As the No.1 Brewer in Wales, S.A. Brain & Co. Ltd are fiercely proud of their Welsh heritage and the fact that they remain family owned. Founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain and his uncle Joseph Benjamin, S.A. Brain & Co. Ltd have been brewing beer in Wales’ capital for more than 135 years.

In 2012 they opened the Brains Craft Brewery which allowed them to brew in smaller batches and be more experimental with their flavours. To date they have produced over 100 craft beers, and the Craft Brewery has become an integral part of the Brains beer range.

33cl bottle. Pours slightly hazy orange golden colour with a huge most good lasting off-white head. Aroma of bitter fruity hops, resins, peach. Taste of intense bitter hops, zest, peach, resins, long bitter finish.

Bottle at home, orange beer medium head. Aroma is citrus, caramel. Taste is citrus, bitter, hint of soap. not bad.

Cask @ GBBF 2015. Pours a dark amber brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee aroma. Roasted malty chocolate and coffee flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee finish.

Bottle from Vinomondo, Conwy. Deep dark amber with a very thin head. Has a strong chocolate malt aroma, with a similar taste that includes some caramel.

Clear medium amber colour, small half-way lasting off-white head, good lacing. Aroma pale malt, light fruity, bubblegum, caramel, pine. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, bready, aftertaste bittersweet, herbal notes, bit dusty, dry finish. Smooth and mild mouthfeel, medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. For sure not an APA but a pleasant mild IPA.

Cask (handpump) @ GBBF 2015, Great British Beer Festival, London Olympia, Hammersmith Road, London, England W14 8UX. [ As Brains Cafe Phoenix ].Clear dark red brown color with a average, open and frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting to diminishing, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, nesquick, sweet chocolate. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a long duration, chocolate, artificial, sweet malt, milk chocolate. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20150812]

Bottle from Vinomundo, Conwy. Orange-blonde with a thin head. Hopped, but a strong grainy influence, with a rawness in this respect that’s very evident in its nose and provides a mild grittiness in taste.

Bottle. Red-copper color. Aroma with vanilla, a bit hops and ethers. Taste: malty, hazelnut, vanilla, a little whisky, oak, caramel and toffee.
