Description
In 1996 Pabst, once one of the largest breweries in the United States closed down its production in Milwaukee after 152 years. Since then Pabst’s legacy brands like Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR), Old Milwaukee, Lone Star, Rainier, Stroh’s, Old Style and Schlitz are brewed under contract by third parties. For nearly two decades, MillerCoors brews and distributes all of Pabst's beers under an agreement. In 2019, it has entered with City Brewing Company into a 20-year contract production agreement until 2040. Pabst will gradually transfer from 2021 until 2024 its production from MillerCoors to City Brewing.

Canned. Clear pale yellow, brief head. Aroma? What aroma? Perhaps a whiff of vegetable soup? Sweet and soapy, light bodied with rounded mouthfeel but very, very empty. Perhaps some corn and rice flavuor, and definitely lots of water. Absolutely no bitterness. I believe I should be able to separate this from sparkling water in a blind test.

Blatz Blatz, my old friend Blatz. Quite a name, isn’t it? I remember when throwaway bottles came out and this stuff was really popular, now I’m showing my age. I had to buy a few of these to rate just for old time sakes so I rate as I drink, this is not by memory. Has a nearly sweet cornlike aroma typical of many pale yellow american lagers and the appearance of course is that of the ubiquitous pale yellow american lager. Taste is more impressive than the Blatz light and the flavor is how I always remembered it. Has that unique attribute of Blatz, I see the sale of this recipe has not changed the flavor much. Friendly, cheap and easy to get along with. Not a bad pale yellow lager by any means. Much better than many lagers I’ve tasted especially better than King lager and any of the City lager types. Even better than Henninger Premium Lager! The finish of this suffers from just a bit of industrial bitterness that makes it a little less enjoyable than beers of similar style like schmidt’s or carlsburg. However, overall, not bad.

Canned (thanks heemer77). Pale yellow colour, big foamy white head. Aroma is very much vegetables and sweetness. Flavour is very sugary sweet along with maize.

Ubiquitous pale yellow appearance and head. Sweet and mild corn aroma, tho it says pilsner. First taste has good medium creamy carbonation. Not too offenesive. Very little industrial bitterness building. Friendly and for the most part well behaved. Finish is at times a tad watery. Almost as good as Old German or Schmidt’s. Much better and more refined than city lager or king lager. Could be a good repeatable beer, especially for the price! 33 cents a can. Hey, for the price of gas we may need to sacrifice!

Canette 355ml.

Not a memory rate, I drink as I think. Little sister of my well known friend blatz. Funny name huh? Sweet aroma with possibly a little cream corn, but not much. Possibly strong ale or a little malt liquor like on the smell. Ubiquitous pale yellow american color, what else? Friendly introductory taste. Mannered and well behaved, no offensive bite or bitterness. Not quite as good as Schmidts, old german or Carlesburgh. Much better than city lager or city ice. This is overall a good session brew, very repeatable for at least one session or a couple of yards.

Can (of course) - at a BBQ. Pours thin and watery, with an almost soapy head. Best you can say about this beer is that others suck worse. Overall bumped up due to nostalgia.

Clean, light aroma of malt. Light brassy color with a white head that didn’t survive. Starts a bit malty, not too thin, medium carbonation, probably enough hop to balance the light malt. Better than Bud.

This beer comes in the best can ever! The taste is not too offensive at all. In fact, it is rather drinkable. It doesn’t have much taste, but there is nothing patently offensive. Everything that is there is like ok stuff totally.

Schmidt premium 16 oz pop top can. Has a beautiful pheasant on the front, and the can is very proud looking with its red background. How ironic I just tasted some imported ‘golden pheasant’ before this and this down home Schmidt brew is better! Yes, I’ve tasted this before I became a ratebeerian but I wanted to get some ‘good beer’ experience under my belt before I BMC slam this from memory for a ticker. I am actually drinking this as I rate it. Pour is a little brighter lemon than typical pale yellow american brew and the head is a tad bright yellowish. It is almost like this has been colored with yellow food coloring. Has really nice lacing in my steeler stein. Cannot detect much if any aroma. The flavor begins with a creamy carbonation…nice. The taste is friendly and gentlemanlike. Finish is OK and there seems to be no hint of bitterness. I am surprised to write that this beer is well behaved, repeatable, friendly and easy to like. Got be one of the best buys of the cheap beers.
