Description
When Phil Bennett began planning for the Beowulf Brewing Company in 1996 there was no brewing going on in Birmingham. The original site of the brewery was in Yardley, where independent beer production started in the city in 1997. Beowulf began in a disused ex Co-op shop. Our original “signature” beer, Heroes Bitter, is still popular and sits at the head of an capacious list of regular and occasional beers. Now on the shore of Chasewater near Brownhills, Staffordshire the brewery is awash with Regional and National awards. Beowulf’s dark beers attract particular praise, devotion and accolades. The brewery celebrated its first twenty years last year and in 2018 we will finally get it together to have a beautiful website… turns out the internet is not a flash in the pan! Please come back and see it. All our cask and bottled beers will be listed along with some other interesting stuff.

Tap at the Pup and Duckling, Solihull. Poured a slightly hazy medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, light hop. The flavour is moderate to light bitter with a smooth grainy mineral, cardboard, light hop bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. Not very inspiring.

Cask pint in The Cock Hotel, Wellington Shropshire on 24th Feb 2017. Clean amber pour, white head with lacing. Do not know if the recipe has changed, but this was caramel heavy in both the aroma and taste, toffee esters in the nose too. Not as sweet as the aroma indicated but still very malty and semi-sweet in nature. Hops try to balance out the malty molasses, but do not quite make it. My sweet tooth loved it.

GBBF Day 2. Cask. Clear amber beer, thin pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and has modest fine carbonation. Sweetish malts, floral caramel. Modest dried fruits. Light dry finish. Hangs together well enough.

Half-pint, cask, hand-pulled in The Crown Inn, Oakengates Shropshire on 19th Sep 2016. Slight haze to the light golden body, on top a white head. Floral aroma and flavours, strange softness to the palate, could not get my head around the smooth body or the actual taste, which I found too wishy-washy. Had the beer in between two highly hopped APA’s so might have been poisoned by their strength and depths of flavour.

Cask-conditioned at the Plough, Worcester 16/9/2016. Copper in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Hedgerow and orange fruits, leafy hops, sweet malts, leading to a decent, bitter, finish. A pleasant bitter.
