Description
The first references to a brewery in the Weltenburg Monastery are to be found in the Weltenburg Nekrologium, in which it states that the master brewer died. Another scientifically recognized source is a recorded entry in the “Libellus Traditionum”, which is over 900 years old, and which dates from shortly before or after 1050.

In the barely millennium to the present day, monastic beer production in Weltenburg was only interrupted by the secularization from 1803 to 1846. In 1846 the brewery became monastery property again, and it has remained there to this day. The Weltenburg monastery brewery can therefore rightly be called the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

Subdued aroma of hay and clove. Cloudy golden pour with a very thick head. Banana and lemon taste. Very weak clove finish. Nicely done, but unremarkable.

Chris_O was good enough to carry this all of the across the Atlantic and I appreciate that very much. This was a very good, full bodied bock, but barely a double at a mere 6.9 abv. It pours a bit thicker than most of the style. Very dark brown, looks as good as a bock can look, I have never seen a red tint on a bock before. Great full palate on this beer. There is lots of roasted malt, some light smoke, and caramel. The full palate and excellent flavor put this in the class as Celebrator.

Bottle picked up from the Dodgy Deli’ Cowley Road Oxford, consumed outside my tent at Towersey Festival Poured Reddy brown with impressive beige bubbly head which quickly dissappeared. Nice aroma, some yeast but also very definate raosted overtones there and good bitter chocolate. Taste was sweet and malty but very good and with nice soft mouthfeel, bit nutty, even smokey but jolly decent.

Re-rate, had this again 30th September 2020 cooking Aubergine, Tomato, and Mozzarella Bake listening to Marc Riley on 6Music. Pours dark brown with a tan head. It's easy to forget just how good this is, ridiculously smooth, easy drinking indulgence that would shame a lot of Imperial Stouts at ten to twenty times the price of this. Cocoa, smooth chocolate, no hint of booze, this is a joy to savour. [Bottle from Beers of Europe August 9th 2007. Poured brown with a lovely ruby hue and a small beige head. Aroma was off soft burnt molasses. Soft carbonation and a gently warming taste that was deliciously soft brown molasses again with a delicious toffeeiness and great maltiness also flooding through

Pour is a dark black with a tan head. Aroma is nice with a ton of sweet malt and molasses. Flavor is also on the plus side with lots of toffee and nuts. Then finishes with a very nice mellow raisin flavor. If there was such a thing as raisin juice i would compare it to this. A very tasty dopple and one to seak out.
