Description
The first references to a brewery in the Weltenburg Monastery are to be found in the Weltenburg Nekrologium, in which it states that the master brewer died. Another scientifically recognized source is a recorded entry in the “Libellus Traditionum”, which is over 900 years old, and which dates from shortly before or after 1050.

In the barely millennium to the present day, monastic beer production in Weltenburg was only interrupted by the secularization from 1803 to 1846. In 1846 the brewery became monastery property again, and it has remained there to this day. The Weltenburg monastery brewery can therefore rightly be called the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

Bottle. Looks grand - cloudy orangeish amber with a large white head that lasts well. Spiced bready dough aroma with only hints banana (suits me). Taste follows. A little lighter bodied than many and a little more bitterness at the end too. A good one.

Bottle. Just cloudy amber with a good inch of white head. Bready aroma with herbs, grass and some citrus. Somewhat muddled palate as these things tend to have but it brings the herbal and grassy bitter notes forward. Refreshing, gluggable.

500 ml bottle shared by tfontana. Ty Tom. Deep ruby bordering on Brown in color. Aroma shows deep notes of prune, raisins, English toffee. Flavor follows with some dark bread characteristics. Yeast, minerals.
Ends on some soft bitterness. Nice layers of malt.

Bottle from CBC Liquors, Westford. Clear, cola brown, light viscosity, thin cap of head, rings of lacing. Aroma is strong pumpernickel, raisin/dark fruit, minerals. Taste follows aroma with roasted malt and minerals. Smooth, frothy, creamy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Nothing flashy, just a damn good representation of the style.

Bottle picked up from Degenhart Getrankemarkt, Regen and consumed Tuesday 14th April 2026 after a day working in the garden, currently not listening to any music, but busy cooking a Potato, Onion and Camembert Pie. Pours warm/dark gold with a large white head. Taste is malty with a hint of caramel and toffee. Hoppiness is subtle, not so spring-like I'm afraid, soft mouthfeel, decent carbonation. Fruity with a leaning towards citrus, sweet citrus. It's a decent beer but perhaps hasn't hit the spot quite as much as I'd hoped. Score: 6.6

Muss was Neues sein.

Can, 7C. Pale gold, a cm of white head. Aroma of bread, light spices. Even this cold it's pretty sweet. Clean with sweet bready malt and gentle spiced bitterness. Dull.
