Bottle courtesy of Hopdog: Poured a deep clear golden color ale with a super huge bubbly white head with average retention but great lacing. Aroma of candi sugar is dominant with some warm alcohol with some subtle but enjoyable note of cloves and wheat. Taste is somewhat a mess with way too much sugar and alcohol that covers the cloves and wheat aspect of the beer. Body is thin and too filtrated to be enjoyable but carbonation is just perfect. This one was just definitely too hot for my liking and not something I will seek again.

2006 bottle - foamy, clear copper pour - it’s got the pretty standard Christmas Ale smell we’ve all come to expect, along with some light chocolate and hints of fruit preserves - the carbonation is a little harsh in the mouthfeel - a well developed/balanced spice character, with some peppery hints around the edges - very mild sweetness, with fruit flavors of strawberry and black cherry - there is a very warming quality to this beer that is certainly not from alcohol, but rather, from tthe well-combined spices - gets a little thin near the end, but otherwise I’m really enjoying this.

I first rated this one 11/21/06 and had what I believe was an infected beer because it was very off and awful. Now I am rerating a new can. This beer poured a dark red-caramel color with a huge foamy tan head that produced good lacing. The aroma was sweet with caramel malt and faintly fruity. The flavor was tangy with notes of chocolate, caramel, faint cherries and fig and had a light sour and bitter undertone. The finish was medium length, tangy, bitter and had faint notes of caramel and vague fruits. Medium body and rather smooth. Decent.

Bottle courtesy of Hopdog: Poured a light amber color lager with a super huge foamy head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt is enjoyable and refreshing. Taste of caramel malt is dominating with some light hops closing the show. Body is a bit thin but carbonation is very lively. Good example of the style but nothing to write home about.

On draught at Egajdzis’ house on 10/5/06.
A slight glassiness shows the unfiltered, but well-conditioned nature of the beer. A rosy peach-tangerine body displays a small, but fairly dense, and well-retained white head that laces quite prominently.
Very fragrant simcoe hops in the nose show tons of dry-hopping and late-boil additions. It dosent strike me as an overdone, bittered-to-all-hell version and light bits of fluffy, rather succulent honeyish malts can be daintily picked out as well. As it warms and I continue to take it in, the lush simcoes deepen in complexity, lasting on the finish and producing a very green, watermelon and candied orange note that belies the usual hard pine resin and heavily dry grapefruit. There certainly is some light resin, but it is balanced easily by the light sugars and lively fruitiness. Despite having about 5 glasses of this stuff, and kicking Eric’s keg, the aroma never seemed to fail, nor did it get boring, which is strange, as there isn’t all that much going on. Just goes to show, when hops are done right, the wonderful simplicity can make a huge difference.
No surprises in the flavor, then, when I find a wonderfully drinkable, highly flavorful, yet tastefully done IPA. Some moderately bitter pine needle-like notes perk up at first, but are quickly washed away by melons, tangerines and a finish reminding me of ruby red grapefruit; no doubt the interplay of the light, but noticeable malt, and the tangy citrus notes from the hops. Excellent texture is provided by a comforting, soft malt body and low, but rather tight carbonation (especially for a draught sample). Nearly creamy, though not as heavy as to be creamy, but certainly frothy and invigorating on the palate, with an immense drinkability. Alcohol is never noted, nor any diacetyl. Hop acids never become a problem, even after the end of 4 or 5 glasses. I could have (and would have) kept drinking it.
Not the most complex example, but I don’t think it attempts to be, nor does it seem that it needed to be. Not the sheer tour de force of complexity and powerful flavor that is Mikkeller Simcoe IPA, but wonderful in its own right, and worlds apart from some of the other also-rans in the simcoe IPA category (Weyer dbl Simcoe, stone 10th). Thanks Eric!

I recently got the opportunity to try this beer for the first time both from a bottle and on draft at Smokin’ Joes in Pittsburgh. This rating is for the bottle which I found to be much better than the draft. Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy chestnut color with a huge tan head. The aroma was strong sweet and fruity hops with a hint of apple and pear. The mouthfeel is big and thick. The flavor is strong and sweetly malty with a strong dry floral and moderate fruity hop presence. The overall flavor was rather harsh and reminded me quite a bit of Stone’s Arrogant Bastard. The draft was nothing special.

A slightly hazy yellow beer with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet with primary notes of citrus, but also light notes of hops and malt. The flavor is sweet and rather hoppy with light citrusy notes and a rather dry finish.

Cloudy copper color, mild foam disapates somewhat quickly....distinct strawberries on the nose...can’t seem to distinguish too much else....bitter binish ...but the bitter cuts into the smooth just a bit too soon..."patience bitter, patience"...mmmhhhmmm a nice gassiness..."besides the bitterness, its good"-M

750 cork and wire. So I like fruit in my beers but this really isnt good. I mean its beautiful with its thick purple head, and a beautiful dark purple reddish body. Thats all ther is to this beer. The aroma is pesent - what you would expect, deep raspberries with a sweeet tartness. However, thats it, not much of anything else present. Taste however, is almost non-existent. For so many raspberries there really is nothing to taste. I feel its like soda with the strong carbonation but without the taste of anything. Leaves that aroma like tart raspberry in the aftertaste. As apooptosis says surprisingly unsweet. Oh yeah the alcohol was not apparent and I also had some weird smutz between the cork and the bottle top.

750 cork and wire. Pours thick dark golden with a nice medium sized frothy head. Cannot see through it but still a beautiful translucence. Aroma is very present - farmhouse hay, nice fresh cut grass, citrusy malt zing. Taste is a bit subdued for the aroma. Losses some of the zing but picks up a nice bitterness. A bit heavy feeling and not as free and thirst quenching a I like my Saisons.. Finishes a bit dry with moderate bitterness.
