Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.

Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

The bottle looks great, nice format. Orange in the glass, cloudy, small creamy head. Wonderful smoky-spicy aroma. Starts quite sourish, intense notes of apricot. Finish mild, but still complex sourish without being too aggreissiv, lemon notes and a bit salty, also spicy-wheaty. Very well balanced and drinkable. Yes, more of this, please!

The bottle looks great nice name with a nice story behind it. In the glass deep black, a bit oily, not very zippy, very small head. Malty aroma, a bit soapy-alcoholic, also some smoke. Starts not too strong, fine malty, chocolate notes and some liquorice. Finish gets a bit sweeter, still deep-malty, more and more sticky-oily. Very well balanced. Gets better with every sip. A very good beer! Hope there will be more such interesting Freigeist beers!

Bottle looks good, nice format. Dark orange in the glass, very zippy. Smoky aroma. Starts quite sourish, malty with notes of cinnamon. Not as smoky as the aroma. Finish dry-sourish with lemon notes, a bit salty. Dry aftertaste. Really nice beer!

Bottled (from bierkompass.de). Hazy pale copper colour with mediumsized off-white head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is some caramel, sour wood, mild herbal and spicy notes as well as mild berries. Flavour is sour wood, some mild wheat, herbs, spices and mild red sourish berries. Feels a bit raw still, but this one has probably got some aging potential as well. Rather dry acidic wooden finish and aftertaste.

Langer Biterschokoladenabgang.

Bottle. Light sweet nose with a woodsmoke layer. Cloudy dark yellow, lacing rim. Initial lactic on the tongue, then salty and finally smoky - more so than the Abraxxas I feel. Heather and clay, dry lactic finish - not too sour though. Sparkly dry mouthfeel. Tasty and really interresting.

Bottled, bought at pre-ZBF ’10. Hazy golden color, short frothy off-white head. Aroma of some citrus, straw, bit yeast, hint of lactic acid, bit bready, hint of tartness and barnyard, smoke. Sour taste, some caramel malt, bit grainy. Very strange combination.
