Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.
Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

ACBF. Opaque black brown beer, residual tan head. Rich soft malt with, unsuprisingly, milky coffee. Trace amounts of licorice and lactose. Nice!

ACBF. Opaque black beer, residual tan head. Soft palate, semi dry. Dark malt and nicely judged vanilla oak. A little unsweet dark chocolate and mellow coffee. Sprinkle of minerals in the semi dry finish. So good to see a German brewer trying different things! More power to their elbows!

Pours as viscous as its Mocha sibling; but with an order of magnitude higher beige head, even relatively stable. Musky smell, like something out of experimental cuisine; caramelized rare vegetable purée or so; fuselalcohols. But... enticing. Dry, sweet and faint bitterish flavour, with spikes of alcohol and fusels; fruity esters, smothered in light treacle. And finally, after some warming, up, vanillabeans and crème Anglaise with melanoidins. Very, very well-bodied; huge alcoholwarming. Yes, it’s not just plain vanilla. And neither are that the Greek vaseillustrations they showed us in Poësis at school...

Pours viscously & headless; 1 mm head forming after a couple of seconds, only to disappear as quickly again; near black beer. Mushrooms, bacon and sweet, strong coffee - this is full breakfast! Sweet-roasted, coffee with a bitter ending, that is at least partly hoppy. Warming up, more depth with black cardemom and more smoked. Very balanced, which is rare, here. Unbelievably thick, viscous, voluptuous MF, alcoholwarming. Nice, rich I.S.

Small, off-white rim over hazed, burgundy beer with a foxy sheen. Very perfumed; red berries and an addition of rosemary or lavender. I would suggest red lingonberries, but more perfumed, in a nice way. Taste, however, is too perfumed, very spcied - rosemary. Again fruity, but less easy to specify. Finish is piney, cypress, bitterish-spicy. Velvety MF, but with a harsh finish. Aftertaste is more balanced, but still too perfumed. Strange, weird, overperfumed - but it is audacious and that deserves points as well.

Draught at ACBF 2011. Looks good in the glass, deep black, small head. Intense malty-dry aroma. Starts strong, fine malty, almost a bit smoky, hints of vanilla and coffee. Well balanced finish, a bit sweet, modest woody. Very good!

Medium beige, dense head, pretty persistent over dull-brown beer, hazed. Sourish, almost aromatic vinous nose, hops in the background and a touch of cake. Dry, ashy, and very saturated taste & MF. One seems to drink a ständiges wachsendes head. Bit nutty, once the sweetness starts to come through, as hazelnut milkchocolate, even vanilla-perfumed. Retronasal however hopbitterness shines through, albeit restrained. Quite slick, medium bodied. Give me this blind, and Altbier might well figure amongst the last to srping to my mind. But that is not a reason for not liking it.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, no head, opaque black colour, aroma of carob, soy sauce, cocoa and a touches of smoke and coffee, flavour of cocoa, chalk, mollasses with touches of smoke and oak. Body a little too light but overall an interesting and a bit unusual stout

Very small beige rim over deep red-brown beer. Strikingly dry-hoppy nose (non-C hops), new carpet; coffee in the background. Sourish-burnt flavour; stout-like acidity, the "carpet"flavour (solvent?) arrives in the finish, but remains pretty hidden, compared to the nose. Pretty dry, but lively carbonated MF. Medium to well-bodied. Much less roasted/coffeelike than the non-Saphir version; more hoppy (especially in the nose), but the acidity is less Brett-like, a bit indifferent. Less characteristic, but maybe a tad more balanced.
