Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.

Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

Bottled 375ml (PBF, BB 06/2012)
Deep opaque black, small white head. Licorice, burned malts in the nose. Medium to full-bodied. Licorice, wood, hard candy, burned malts, soy sauce, sourness in the flavor. Soft palate, some milk lactose. Feels like barrel-aged beer :) Probably not intensionally.

Cloudy brown beer, small yellowish to beige head, non adhesive, non stable. Aroma: smoke, fruity, dirty yeast, rotten fruit. MF: light to no carbon, medium body. Taste: sour first, apple skin, bitter hops, bit fruity, some caramel. Aftertaste: quite bitter and still a little sour.

Bottle from Bierkompass. Dark brown beer with almost no head. Fruity aroma, with sugar, hops and coffee. Taste, bittersweet with light sourness, coffee, hops, maybe chocolate. Not bad, drinkable.

This was quite a surprising brew. Still this is not my favorite style. Score was pretty average.

37,5cl bottle from Bierkompass. BB 06/2011. Poured pale golden with a thin white head, some lacing. Lovely lactic, sour, earthy aroma. Quite complex. Smokey notes a little later on when taking the last few sips. Flavor is yeast, some sourness, berries and a long nice smokey finish. Excellent!

Draught: Reddish-black coloured, small, almost not existing head; dry cellary-sourish nose with a caramelly backbone; solid dry bitter-sweet flavour, faint traces of salt, relatively light bodied for a beer of 8.0%; lingering dry and smoother dark-malty finish. Not exciting, but O.K. .....

Intensiv hopfiger Abgang. Sehr gut! 12/12/12/13/13/12
