Ten years later, following a career in the brewing sector for Julien, and in the wood industry for François, the 2 friends undertake the project of setting up their own brewery in Basècles at the old Amorison sawmill. Two years were needed to acquire the equipment (acquired on occasion from several Belgian breweries who did not hesitate to help the two young people to get started) and to restore the premises, and it was in November 2012 that the fireplace in the brewery let out a sweet smell of hops for the first time
The objective? The production of a local artisanal beer, brewed with natural regional products. The barley is cultivated by two farmers on the land in the village 1 km from the brewery and is transformed into malt at the Château malt house located 7 km from Basècles. The hops are partly sourced from the hop plant grown on the brewery's land. The wood, historical heritage of the site, will be used for the manufacture of the bins at the brewery. The choice fell on poplar, a tree from Hainaut.

Aroma is yeasty with a touch of banana and some hop. Flavour is spicy, yeasty with a little banana sweetness. There’s a little bitter hop in the aftertaste. Carbonation a little too high. Quite flavoursome for its 5.5%.

Good, stable, fine & dense white head over hazy yellow beer. Spicy, pale malts, very fresh or greenmalt, garden herbs and yeastimprint. Dry, mainly malty, outspoken neutral. Maltbread, bit grassy. Warming up, cattle fodder. Very spritzy, near fizzy carbonation, masking part of the flavour (?), adding a certain acidity. I really don’t see the interest in making a virtually neutral drinking ale by a microbrewery. As well drinking industrial pilsner on tap, provided it runs fast enough. There’s nothing new, nothing exciting to find here. And it’s not the Walloon blurb that is going to elevate it instead.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Nr Gent, Belgie, 2014 consumed at Merton BF tidy up mtg with dad also in attendance at Nick & Anna’s Wednesday 12th March 2014 Pours slighly hazy, mid gold with off-white head. Fruity & refreshing were my initial thoughts as I spent more time pondering my selection of Indian meal from the takeaway menu. Bittersweet and light on the spiciness (the beer not my Indian meal) good malty backbone a bit citrussy, very easy sipper. Quite liked this beer. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

Bottle from Dranken Geers, February 2014 consumed at home Wednesday 12th March 2014 Pours hazy, cloudy mid yellow/gold with a clean white head. Clean, spritzy nose with a little spicy yeastiness going on. Bit thin but otherwise fine, bitterness shows and because this doesn’t taste quite like a Belgian ale (I hadn’t a clue about the beer or style) I would have put it down as a Saison as it seemed a little more Saison/Farmhouse like. 75 cl. bottle sampled @ GBF 2013. Hazy orange with a white head. Smell is fruity with soap, orange peel, candy sugar, BE yeast. Tate is a bit too soapy for me, sweet, BE yeast, white pepper and sweet white bread, slight bitter hay in the back. Big BE yeast body. It is okay but not a big fan of either the beer or the label for that mater. Thx! to the RB Crew for sharing.

Medium, yellowish head over fully hazy yellow-straw beer. Straw, grass, hay, garden herbs. Sweetish-flowery character, but not much else. Slick, light to medium bodied. Not very special, but certainly drinkable. Compared to some other starters, this one deserves some credit.
