Description
Alaska has a rich history of brewing. From the explorers of the 1700s through the Gold Rush, many a thirsty Alaskan has been able to enjoy locally made beers.

In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with 2 fingers of beige, cola-like head that lingers. Nice aromas of chocolate & coffee next to grapefruit pith and orange peel. Balanced on the palate with chocolate and citrus and clean herbal note. Soft mouthfeel with a hazy, juicy texture. Leans dry on the finish. This was fun. They nailed what they were going for.

Super hazy golden and peach coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head that fades very quickly and leaves just about nothing on top a few seconds later. Aroma of bright grassy and citrusey hop notes with a lot of bitterness from the alpha acids from the hops noticeable with a good malt backbone in the nose and some alcohol poking through as well. Medium-bodied; Relatively strong malt backbone shows at first with some light citrus and pine notes that gives way after a few seconds to a lot of pine and bitterness, all coming from the alpha acids of the hops with a pleasant, but mild sweetness on the end with some of the fruit notes cutting through the bitterness and the malts. Aftertaste shows a nice level of bitterness with some smoother malts and a crisp citrus flavour with some of the sweetness picked up from the fruits, along with some caster sugar notes, but ends pretty well. Overall,  a nice and crisp, robust, rich and flavourful IPA (bordering on Imperial status), that hits nicely and brings out some good aspects of the halibut and chips that i'm enjoying with it! I sampled this sixteen pour on draught at Humpy's (great Alaskan AleHouse) in Anchorage, Alaska on 05-October-2021 for US$8,50 sampled while here for the day on 05-October-2021.
