Description
Alaska has a rich history of brewing. From the explorers of the 1700s through the Gold Rush, many a thirsty Alaskan has been able to enjoy locally made beers.
In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

Nice new-school IPA, with the piney bitterness of the West Coast but a fruit-forward juicy middle like more modern takes on the style. Grapefruit, peach, and berry are balanced by notes of resin and bread, with undertones of caramel, pineapple, and wood shavings. Finishes somewhat oily with lingering grass and citrus. Tasty pint.

12oz can. Pretty awesome to see a Strata hopped beer at a reasonable price. Great body, the wheat and lack of filtration flesh it out. The hop tone is quite modern, juicy, pleasant. At first it reminded me of Mosaic with light peachy/mango juiciness, but it is brighter, more tangy...more like a really mild pink grapefruit with a touch of dank. A really nice IPA, really cool example of the Strata hop.

12oz bottle. Straightforward, clean, really well done Blonde. Filtered tan body. Steady, thin, white head. Pleasant, clean, doughy malt tones. Bright, short hop balance, perhaps a pinch new-school, works really well. Honey is mild, perhaps lingers in the finish. Good.

This is my first Alaskan Amber since visiting Alaska several years ago. Offered to me in a bottle by a good friend in Las Vegas, no glass this time. A drink, pretty decent. Your basic amber taste but maybe a bit better. Wheat bread, some caramel, malt, water and grain with a nice small bitterness. Cold is good, colder is better.

650ml bottle. Jet black colour with slightly late awakening, small to average, thick, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Roasty, chocolately, dark malty and fruity aroma, notes of dark chocolate, couverture, morello, a touch of vanilla, plum, blue grapes, smoky overtones. Taste is sweet-ish and bitter, roasty, chocolately dark malty and fruity, notes of dark chocolate, couverture, cocoa, morello, plum, plum butter, some milk chocolate, a touch of vanilla, smoky overtones, bitter hoppy counterpart; lingering, sweet-ish, chocolately and fruity finish, well hidden alcohol, a subtle warming effect is perceptible though. Watery and minimally creamy texture, smooth and soft, minimally repellant, metallic palate, prickly carbonation. Well balanced, harmonious and integrated, dangerously drinkable. Very good.

Slightly hazy golden and peach coloured body with a thinnish, single to perhaps two centimetre tall, pure white head. Aroma of crisp citrusey hops with a touch of tropical fruits and grass, but not much else, as there is noticeable hoppiness, but not too much in terms of alpha acids or bitterness. Light to Medium-bodied; Floral and quite grassy hop notes show first with a softer citrusey flavour and some very light tropical fruit notes, but nothing overtly juicy about this - it shows some nice hops without bitterness and the malt balances relatively well. Aftertaste shows some light sweetness and a good amount of malt backbone to supplement the relatively strong grassy and citrusey hop notes, which are strong, but again don't show much bitterness. Overall, a nice and crisp beer that shows a good deal of flavours from the hops, but not a lot of bitterness from said hops. Good to sample here out West-ish. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught at Sickie's (Burger Bar) in Rapid City, South Dakota on 26-June-2020 for US$5,50.
