Finally tried one of the charlevoix. Lots of complexity. Starts off smelling sweet, something like a fruit cake with sweet rum or grande marnier. Reminds me of the rum chocolates my parents used to eat with a little spice added in. Colour dark reddish black. Some raisins, sweet fruits, plums. Lots of alcohol. Half litre bottle.

A blonde lager with a thin white head. In aroma, a sweet biscuit malt with light mineral notes, herbal Czech hops. In mouth, a smooth biscuit malt, crisp, light hopping and mineral notes, chalkyness, nice and quaffable. On tap at Espace Public, Feb. 24, 2012.

Bottle from a trade with peteinSD. Pours cloudy golden color with huge white head. Aromas of floral hops, citrus, fruit, and yeast. Citrusy, grassy and doughy flavors with some malt sweetness. Medium body with lively carbonation. Delicious! Thanks Peter.

Bottle: Poured a hazy amber/orangey color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of light citrus notes and medium dry caramel malt. Taste is mix between light fruity and citrusy hops with a touch of resin and some dry caramel malt. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Interesting though missing some dry hops qualities.

Bouteille 500ml. De couleur dorée-ambrée et claire. Nez de levures fruitées (agrumes, moyen de bananes), de houblon floral, légèrement citrique, herbeux et résineux, léger de caramel et de grains de céréales avec des traces de biscuits. Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen ainsi qu’une texture riche, légèrement sirupeuse et aux petites notes résineuses. Goût amer de houblon moyennement floral et citrique (une amertume présente toute la gorgée) accompagné d’un léger goût de levures fruitées (agrumes, très léger de bananes) lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de grains de céréales fraîches avec un moyen-léger goût de caramel et des notes de biscuits puis en finale l’amertume reprend de l’ampleur tout en affichant un caractère légèrement herbeux avec des notes résineuses et terreuses et il est accompagné de notes d’alcool. Post-goût long et un peu sec, amer de houblon herbeux, moyennement citrique, légèrement résineux avec des notes florales ainsi que des notes fruitées (zeste d’agrumes) et des traces d’alcool.

(bottle from the LCBO, not aged). Served in a large wine glass @ a little below cellar temperature. Pours a quite dark reddish brown with a large, pillowy, fine tan head which recedes slowly leaving lots of lacing. Aroma is complex with dark fruits, a little raisin, sugar, yeast and some licorice and spice. Taste sweet molasses malt, figs and dates, some yeasty spices and a bit of hop bitterness at the finish to prevent it from being cloying. Mouthfeel is mid-weight for a Belgian, with effervescent, fine carbonation so it doesn’t feel over-carbonated, and a fairly creamy finish with little detectable alcohol. I usually find doubles boring, but this is an excellent one with nice spiciness and complexity and great balance overall!

Sampled at the 1st Festibiere d’hiver in Gatineau, Quebec. This one was hazy golden colour with an off-white head that had decent lace. Good spiciness in the nose. Nice dry mouthfeel. Fruity aftertaste with nice yeast. The finish is pleasantly dry-hopped. This was a great experience from Charlevoix (as I always enjoy their brews).
