De Noël, cette Super Fagnes l’est assurément et vous fait passer un moment plutôt agréable. Il lui manque cependant ce petit plus de plénitude qui lui fera rester au stade de bière appréciable. La bouteille est malheureusement de 25 cl, ce qui personnellement ne me conviendra jamais. Mention passable sur l’étiquette mais un titrage alcoolique de 8,5 % Abv et une couleur brune (claire et limpide) qui mettent en confiance. Une mousse plus abondante aurait été cependant la bienvenue (beige de 3 mm d’épaisseur). Le nez est de façon surprenante fraîche et herbacée. Nous retrouvons bien entendu des arômes de malt torréfié, de chocolat et de candi, mais la réglisse et la coriandre confère des flaveurs très aériennes. La dégustation ne fera que confirmer cette impression. L’attaque est souple sur les céréales et les fruits jaunes pour laisser s’exprimer par la suite l’amertume (EBU de 20) sur des arômes de réglisse et de café. L’arrière bouche est relativement discrète (je l’aurais souhaité un peu plus présente) mais accompagnant bien l’ensemble sur une base céréale-caramel. L’alcool est très bien intégré, mais l’ensemble manque à la fois de chaleur et de corpulence provenant d’une part de la tonalité de base sur la réglisse et de l’autre part de l’arrière bouche trop peu présente. Le final, d’une longueur juste acceptable, laisser juste entrevoir des notes un peu plus corsé sur le girofle. Une bière de Noël en légèreté de somme. Mais pour un 25 au soir, cela convient parfaitement.

750ml bottle [as "Super des Fagnes Noël", bb 09/2014]. Slightly cloudy, copper-ish brown colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweet-ish fruity aroma, notes of dried fruit, raisin, banana, hints of morello cherry, a minimally alcoholic touch. Taste is moderately sweet, fruity, notes of dried fruit, raisin, dried banana, red apple, a touch of morello cherry. Harmonious, not too sugary, better than just OK.

0.25l bottle. Dark amber body with an off-white head. Aroma of dark sugar syrup, lemon zest, orange zest, barnyard and some berries. Taste of toast, orange zest, lemon zest and floral hops. The brett character doesn’t really work with the toast flavor for me. Not that its bad, more like it’s not balanced.

F: huge, lasting, pink-white. C: reddish to amber, hazy, non-transparent. A: most cherries artificial, solvent, syrupy, hint of banana, almonds. T: cherries, some sourness on the palate, syrupy, malty, caramel, hint of nut, bubblegum, sticky in the throat, light body, good carbonated, not my cup of beer, 0,75l bottle from Carrefour in Brussels.

Every now and then, one encounters a beer which emphatically reminds us of the fact that it is all made of grains - this one contains barley, wheat, spelt and oat. Bottle from the Hopduvel. Loose, coarse, irregular, off-white head over a warm, amberish orange blonde beer with light haze and quite vivid fizz. Aroma of banana, redcurrant, soap, mango, iron, toasted bread, walnut, red apple, dried orange peel, honey, peppermint, chicken spices, sweet paprika, pink pepper, bourbon and some ’rusty’, onsetting oxidation. Sweetish, estery onset, hints of raw pineapple, banana, mandarin and mango with sourish redcurrant accent further accentuated by very spritzy, minerally carbonation (actually overcarbonated, tiring a bit). Caramelly and nutty maltiness in the middle with a bitterish toasted edge, paired with a ’deep’ grain sourishness (the spelt?) and a certain wheat soapiness, rounded and smooth with a slightly oily mouthfeel; this play of sweetish, toasted bitter and deeply sourish simply continues in the finish, where a soft, leafy, herbal hop bitterness adds a light amount of drought. Decent, very ’Belgian’ in its banana ester presence, but a bit tiring in the end and lacking body and complexity; I can understand that they wanted to produce a malt-forward beer, but a higher hop dosis would probably be beneficial here.
