Description
Brewing started behind the Royal Clarence Hotel, and in those days trading as the Royal Clarence Hotel Brewery, in Burnhan-on-Sea in August 1982. A 5 barrel brew plant was used primarily to supply the hotel only. The brewery was taken over in May 1984 and the beers became more available in the free trade. Due to problems with the water supply, the brewery was using that much that hotel guests could not wash, the brewery moved in January 1993 to an old cider mill in West Hewish, Weston-super-Mare. Capacity was tripled during the move and in 2000 work started on upgrading the plant to a 30 barrel brew length. The brewery closed in early 2017 but relaunched shortly afterwards as Pitchfolk Brewery.

Cask at Chippenham Beer Festival. Black with a tan head. Chocolate, plastic and earth. Could really do with losing that plastic.

GraviCask, shared with Finn at Camra’s National Winter Ales Festival. The body colour is deep dark brown. A few bubbles at the top. Leafy hops and berries on the nose. Mixed taste of brown malts, fruity hops and mid-sweet berries. Malt-fruity bitterness to the ending. Medium bodied. Quite tasty (Derby 19.02.2016).

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol, 18/2/2016. Near black in colour, with a decent, off-white, head. MIlk chocolate, some toasty malts, berry fruit sweetness and some liquorice, leading to a sweet, camp coffee, finish. Enjoyable.

Cask, on gravity, at Tewkesbury Winter Beer Festival, 5/2/2016. This was a festival special, to celebrate its 21st anniversary. Deep gold in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Aroma of stone fruits, leafy hops and some yeasty grains. Flavour was sweetish with more fruit, crisp cereal malts and a lengthy, bitter, finish. Good.

Hazy golden beer with a sort of mottled head of white and amber from the bottle. I assume this has arisen from sediment in the bottle or something. Faint grassy aroma. taste has the same quality, with some zesty citrus coming through from the hop. Other than a faint bitterness there isn’t much flavour which lingers. Nice though.
