Description
Brewing started behind the Royal Clarence Hotel, and in those days trading as the Royal Clarence Hotel Brewery, in Burnhan-on-Sea in August 1982. A 5 barrel brew plant was used primarily to supply the hotel only. The brewery was taken over in May 1984 and the beers became more available in the free trade. Due to problems with the water supply, the brewery was using that much that hotel guests could not wash, the brewery moved in January 1993 to an old cider mill in West Hewish, Weston-super-Mare. Capacity was tripled during the move and in 2000 work started on upgrading the plant to a 30 barrel brew length. The brewery closed in early 2017 but relaunched shortly afterwards as Pitchfolk Brewery.

Pours a dark brown black colour with a red tint and a foamy beige head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and a little fruit. Roast malt, chocolate and coffee flavours, again some dark fruit and a dryish bitterness. Creamy in the mouth and a very moreish.

500ml bottle: BBD end of Nov 2017. Poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged vase shaped pint glass at home on 28th Oct 2016. Looks good on pouring, clear and clean amber bodied, the white head staying firm initially, then fading quickly to a wisp and collar: pity. Malty front with a light bitter, hoppy finish. This is OK, mild caramel aroma and taste followed by a pleasant hop bitterness. Nothing to set your taste buds alight, but fine from start to finish.

Cask at the Queen Hotel (JDW), Aldershot. Amber with a thin white head that laces the glass nicely; sweet orange juice aroma; sweet orange taste with a sour grainy body; and a sweet biscuity finish with some orange citrus zest. Lacking any real bitterness.

Playhouse Spoons. Gravicask off the rear counter! Hazy gold beer, patchy pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry, modest fine carbonation. Light malts. Tangy dried fruits. Some orange and apple. Mild floral. Dry finish. Mild bitter linger. A bit wonky.

Cask at Canary Wharf Spoons. It pours clear golden - amber with a medium white head. The aroma is floral, hay, biscuit and stone fruits. The taste is pretty sweet and granny upfront, biscuit, floral, spice, lemon peel, with a bitter - sweet finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Perhaps a touch sweet overall. A fair golden ale, but it wouldn’t stand out in a crowd.
