Description
Brewing started behind the Royal Clarence Hotel, and in those days trading as the Royal Clarence Hotel Brewery, in Burnhan-on-Sea in August 1982. A 5 barrel brew plant was used primarily to supply the hotel only. The brewery was taken over in May 1984 and the beers became more available in the free trade. Due to problems with the water supply, the brewery was using that much that hotel guests could not wash, the brewery moved in January 1993 to an old cider mill in West Hewish, Weston-super-Mare. Capacity was tripled during the move and in 2000 work started on upgrading the plant to a 30 barrel brew length. The brewery closed in early 2017 but relaunched shortly afterwards as Pitchfolk Brewery.

Bottle from Jacks, Westholme Stores Goring-on-Thames, consumed WOMAD Festival, Wiltshire, Friday 27th July 2012 It’s very dark brown with a tan head. Bitter chocolate dark tangy and fruity some bitter cocoa powder and a rugged roastiness. Enjoyable and better in bottle than when I had it in cask at The Hop Pole, Aylesbury recently. Bottle. A bit, off-white head forms over a clear, dark golden body. Rather fruity nose with a touch of old garbage in the far back. Caramel and biscuits too. Quite fruity flavor, with some fruity sourness. Maltyness in the back. Medium to full body, soft carbonation. Some bitterness in the finish. Well, sure a decent beer, but I can’t imagine myself drinking more of it. 120720

Cask at the London Drinker Festival 2012. Pours dark brown with a sturdy, tan foam head. Aroma holds some chocolate, dark caramel candy, faint treacle. Medium sweet flavor with some charcoal, cocoa, dirt and earth, moss and other burnt wood. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sticky on the finish with restrained chocolate, perhaps hints of liqueur or something, a bit more earth and burnt woody bitterness. Pretty good stuff.
