0,5 l bottle from our local Hol´Ab! market. Clear dark golden in the glass with a stable and nearly two finger white foamy head. Looks really good. Malty grainy aroma, little bit grassy, some caramel. Taste starts with caramel, malt in the second row. Soft but present bitter hop. Lower carbonated than expected. Long lasting aftertaste. Nice one.

Bottle thanks to Jamie. Appearance - pale yellow golden and clear, steady carbonation and a fluffy white head. Nose - sweetcorn, citrus and bready. Taste - lemon, biscuit and light hop grassiness. Palate - light bodied, very balanced middle and finish, good taper and linger. Overall - great example of Helles.

Kellerbier or Zwickelbier - there is no sharp line of distinction between both terms anyway - from this 19th century brewery in Bayreuth, Bavaria; 50 cl swingtop bottle. Releases quite some carbon dioxide upon opening. Thick and creamy, off-white, membrane-lacing, evenly structured, dense, pillowy head on an initially crystal clear but later misty, beautifully deep old golden robe with ochre glow, almost a brownish orange, notably darker than I was expecting, turning a bit more peachy when the yeast goes in. Aroma of freshly baked bread or croissants, Pumpernickel bread even, wet rusk, spring water, minerals, dried violets, lime blossom tea, linden tree leaves in autumn (again linden - the ones I encounter almost daily in this time of the year), dry cookie dough. Clean, smooth onset, close to neutral at first with only the most minute fruity yeast effects, straight on to a nice rounded maltiness, softly carbonated as befits the genre but still with some pleasantly 'stinging' minerality underneath; slick Pumpernickel-dough-like, slightly beech-nutty, wholegrain-bready malts fill the middle, sweetish with a very light toasty-bitterish edge, this refined bitterness accentuated by a floral, bit herbal hoppiness which only serves to highlight the malts here - yet leaves a pleasant, thin layer of dryness to counter the roundness of the malts. The hops linger a bit in the end, with very quenching effect. Solid, sharply focused, clean and smooth Kellerbier, with the malts and the hops in perfect balance for the style and in that sense showcasing this brewery's skills like their other beers do. These artisan German Lagers are a true delight for the broad-spectrum beer lover for their sheer, 'crystalline' purity and I wish I could have them more often.

Hefeweizen from Bayreuth, the city in eastern Bavaria perhaps best known for Richard Wagner's Festspielhaus. Thick, dense and foamy, egg-white, stable yet thinning and eventually breaking head on a misty warm old-golden robe with khaki tinge, cloudy and more peachy with the rest of the sediment added. Aroma of very strong mashed and ripe dessert bananas, clove, cinnamon, cooked red apple, ripe pear, banana bread, sweetclover, acacia honey, hints of mandarin or even orange. Sweet, estery-fruity onset, banana, ripe pear and honeydew, softishly carbonated with sweetish, soft and 'fluffy' brioche-like maltiness and a gentle streak of sourish, more grainy wheat underneath - the sourishness working well with the phenolic spiciness further at the back, bringing a 'sunny', even somewhat orange-like aroma to the whole. Clove- and cinnamon-like spiciness is present as well, along with a mild floral hop bitterish note bringing things to a perfect closure, as the sourishness of the wheat and the bready sweetishness of the barley linger on. Bright, 'summery', quite exuberant Hefeweizen, yet still firmly rooted in traditions with no frills attached: this to me is an excellent example of its sophisticated and ancient style. Absolutely lovely Weissbier.
