12 oz. amber bottle. Opens with a decent amber ale smell, malty and a little nose of caramel. Some hints of oxygenation, too, Color is a decent reddish brown, thin layer of foam on top. Okay ale taste, with a good caramel malt note, just a bit of ale fruitiness. Aftertaste like nicely browned toast, with a ring of English type hops around it. Good for relaxing with before I go balance my checkbook.

[on tap at Holiday Inn, Portsmouth] Used to love this when I was young but you donโt seem to see it very often in pubs nowadays. Near black with brown hints; large creamy beige head; no carbonation. Smells of cocoa. Taste is milk chocolate and roasted malt, with a wonderfully thick, creamy finish. Just the faintest hint of metals from the pasteurisation spoils it a little, but this is much less evident than in other keg beers. Maybe the flavour isnโt quite as strong as Guinness, but the mouthfeel is so much better - this is heavenly to drink and slips down a treat. A gem amongst keg beers.

(Canned) Very dark brown, almost black, with creamy, pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with milky chocolate, cocoa, dark bread and hints of ashes or smoke. Malty, roasted taste with notes of dark bread, chocolate, coffee and dried fruit. Mainly dry, fairly thin body. Rather low bitterness with some cocoa shining through in the finish. Definitely a decent low abv version. In short: thin stout with dark chocolate, dark bread and a hint of smoke.

50 cL can. Pours dense dark brown with a dense/creamy tan head. Roasted malt aroma, light chocolate note. Smooth malty and roasted flavoured. Light acidic touch into a bitter finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Light carbonation into the finish. Smooth and dry bitter. Surprisingly good for a 3.5.

Biggish brown-beige lasting creamy head. Dark barely translucent red body. Roasty milky caramelly aroma, mild and harmonic. Dry-sweetish roasty caramel taste with milky roasted almonds notes. Soft, mild mouthfeel. Mid-bodied. Dry metallic burnt nutty aftertaste. Surprisingly nice. I quite liked it. [0.5l can, MaxiMat, Charlottenberg.]

Pours mahogany/black into an English pint. Widget definitely did it’s job - very defined hot chocolate head on top of the coal colored stout. Negligible roasted cocoa aromas. Creamy upfront with maltiness that leans to cardboard and turns slightly sour and metallic in the finish.
