Description
De Abdij van Leffe, opgericht in 1152, was een norbertijnenabdij waar kanunniken in een gemeenschap samenleefden met bijzondere aandacht voor opvang en gastvrijheid. In 1240 besloten de kanunniken een brouwerij te bouwen om een gezonde en versterkende drank te bereiden. Door de Franse Revolutie werd abdij gesloten. Pas in 1929 werd de abdij heropgericht. In 1952 besloten abt Nys en Albert Lootvoet de brouwtraditie en de goedbewaarde receptuur van Leffe te hervatten. In 1954 al werd Brouwerij Artois hoofdaandeelhouder van Brouwerij Lootvoet. De productie werd in 1977 overgeheveld naar Brouwerij Grade in Mont-Saint-Guibert, tot de sluiting in 1996. Tegenwoordig wordt Leffe gebrouwen bij de brouwerij van Stella Artois in Leuven.

De abdij van Leffe is middels de vennootschap Brasserie de l'Abbaye de Leffe slechts houder van het intellectueel eigendom op de naam Leffe.

Abbey de Abbey Belgian style-12 oz bottle-pours a thick white foamy head and the color is golden. Aroma is musty. Flavor is good for class, although a little on the light side. It tastes creamy, then cinnamon/banana comes through. Finishes OK.

Bottled. Hazy dark yellow colour with big foamy head, lacing. Fruity, yeasty and a bit wheaty aroma with weak alcoholic notes. Strong yeasty fruity flavour with hints of honey and weak alcohol becoming more present in finish and aftertaste. Sweet aftertaste too, and stocky palate.

Bottle. Chocolate malt and cola aroma. Medium brown color - clear with no head. Thick chocolate malt flavor with moderate acidity. Nice and chewy.

Bottle. Sweet wheat malt aroma with cherry tones. Amber color with small head. Sweet wheat malt flavor with light acidity. Nice bodied. A well-blended beer.

Bottle. Aroma has a hint of bonbon. Dark golden colour. Malty flavour and nice full mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pear/apple malt aroma. Medium tan with ample head. Sweet pear flavor with bitter finish. Moderate body. Enjoyable.

(bottle) Hazy orange colour with a foamy white head. Fruity aroma of bananas and pears with a touch of honey and marzipan. Malty taste with notes of bananas and yeast and a warming bitter dry finish.

(bottle) dark red-brown colour with a creamy off white head. Aroma is a well blended combination of cherry fruits and cramellish malts. Bittersweet flavour. Slight roastmalty taste with a smooth vinous touch and a lasting spicy (cinnamon) dry finish.

This used to be a good beer. No longer good. Brown color. Flavor is dryish, woody, a bit malty and very astringent. Long finish.
