June 2017 @home - 50cl bottle from Hopsasam. Amber brown beer with very small head. Nose is dried fruits, caramel. apple. Taste is apple, dried fruits, some caramel, sweet and sweet sour. Full of taste. A tad drier and more balance for me than the regular one.

Small, but stable yellow rim, over faintly hazy ruby-brown beer. Brandy and incense, sugarbread, dark candi sugar in the nose. Armagnac, red fruit, preserved fruit on brandy, again dark candi syrup and maple dito. Bit undercarbonated, but very viscous, voluptuous, alcoholheat, beautifully rounded finish. Very good one, sweet, but exactly in the right way. BTW, I really would love to see more Armagnac barrel aged beers - its an underestimated spirit.

Bottle share at RBBWG 2017, thanks for sharing.

Second beer from a new beer company in Oudenaarde, a barleywine like the first one, aged on calvados barrels. From a 50 cl, clearly old-fashioned English-inspired ’barleywine bottle’ shared at RBBWG 2017 in Antwerp. Thin but stable, pale beige-ish egg-white, bubbly head, ochre-hued bronze colour, hazy but murky in the very end. Aroma of stewed apple and pear brandy (esters mixing with calvados notes, in other words), white port, damp hay, ripe yellow plum and overripe peach, lots of brandy, burnt brown sugar, vanilla, white pepper, glue, wet wood. Very fruity, estery onset, lots of ripe pear, banana, stewed apple, blue plum, fig, unfermented sugary sweetness with sourish undertones, blending with a ’deeper’ and later tartness related to the barrel ageing, drying in the background while a fluffy, soft malt sweet body unfolds, bready and caramelly, deceptively sweet against this tannin-rich, woody, ever further drying ending, where a vinous calvados (and in fact also dry sherry-like) effect develops, establishing a long but non-astringent alcohol warmth and lovely vanilla-ish oak retronasally, with an earthy and bready, softening yeast note in the tail. Impressed: many of these new beer companies start off with tripel or blonde, this one opted immediately for high profile barleywines with gastronomical allure. This is a very accomplished beer and a true addition to the Belgian beer map, cleverly linking Belgian strong ale traditions with international trends. Lovely.

Sampled at the RBBWG 2017. Thnx for sharing, everyone ! Pours dark, unclear brown, small white head. Smell is full, bit booze, mildly bitter. Some spiced, dark fruits aspects. Taste has a very mild sour touch, full, dark fruits. Full flavor. Mild maltyness, very nice in general. Bit thin MF and high carbo though. Nive nevertheless, but I can see this well improving in the next years. happy I have another bottle to check that out !

Small white head, over hazy foxy-brown beer. Minty-ish, lemonbalm, sparandrap, dry apples nose. Calvados, apple juice, lactic acid, fruit acids. Alcoholwarming, slick, oily, velvety texture. Excellent, complex, and a perfect example for how the Calvados can be a plus.

Thank you JefVerstraete! 500 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBWG VI (2017). Murky brown amber, little tanned head. Nose is thick sweet vinous wine, red grape with thick caramel, malt sugar, toffee, figs puree, berries. Taste is sweet orange peel, sugar, vinous, red grape, warming, figs, dark fruits, berries; Thick vinous sugar, lightly boozy. Thick bodied. Not sure if it should be this vinous, closer to a Porto barrel than anything resembling Calvados but it works, pretty good. I liked it about the same as the regular version.
