Bourbon barrel aged imperial stout by a brewery I had never heard of, sampled at BCBF ’23. Yellowish beige, open ring of foam on ink black robe. Aroma of melting dark chocolate, toasted coconut, candied date, treacle, toffee, bourbon, vanilla (including oak wood), coffee grounds. Densely sweet onset (blackberry jam, sirop de Liège) with the sweetness mitigated by light umami (porcini, gravy), softly carbonated with very full body; layers of toffee, dark chocolate, roasted walnuts and eventually mild coffee fill the mouth, their general bittersweetness highlighted by warming bourbon and bright vanilla accents. Some spicy hops and dark fruitiness linger along the bourbon and thick bittersweet malts. Very classically made but also very solid, a bit old school perhaps but that is exactly how I like my BBA stouts.

Draught Quite lacey white head over faintly orangey, veiled golden beer. Toast, waffles' syrup, pale malts, pineapple ester. Dry, herbal-bitterish flavours, rootspices, bit peppery. This time waffles' dough, root vegetables. Light to medium bodied; good carbonation. Bit average.

Draught Small white cover on veiled yellow beer. Rather demure, but fine citruspeel nose. Citrussy fruitesters. Dry lemon/grapefruitpeel, bit moldy even. Szechuan pepper, root spices. Medium bodied at least. Good carbonation. Not bad, if not easy drinkable.

Clear dark brown to black beer, small aery beige brown head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very roasted, chocolate, vanilla notes indeed, some caramel as well. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sugary start, very sweet, soft roast, lots of vanilla, alcohol, lots of chocolate. Aftertaste: bitter, cocoa powder, lots of chocolate still, alcohol, dry, vanilla, good stuff!
