Description
Brass Castle commenced brewing in a garage as a commercial home brewer in August 2011 initially in Pocklington, East Yorkshire. In December 2013 they relocated to Malton, North Yorkshire and expanded to a 10BBL plant. Over time, new tanks arrived and a Taphouse was established next door. Success, friends, family and the odd bank loan have got us where we are now.

The brewery has always pushed itself to brew interesting beers, under the very deliberate constraint of doing so without the use of animal products. In turn, this caused Brass Castle to develop a house yeast strain and specialised processes that could guarantee the final product. From December 2017, every beer brewed at Brass Castle has been based on a gluten-free beer recipes – on the basis that beer should be made available to as many people as possible. Most recently, the brewery invested in canning line and carbonation tanks, to spread the beers further than they have gone before.

Half pint, cask ale, shared with Finn at Waggon & Horses. Pitch black body, fragile lacework, lacing head. Aroma of milk chocolate. Chocolate and vanilla to the taste buds added by earthy malts. Mid-sweet malty ending. O’boy- like. Soft. Quite tasty, a bit too sweet perhaps (York, 26.01.2013).

Half pint, guest ale from cask at The Last Drop Inn. Creamy white head to a hazy, gold-amber coloured body. Dotted spots to the glassware. Grass and half-sweet malts to the nose. Taste character of juicy malts and lemon added by moments of dried fruits with a good bitter support. Good, with session qualities (York, 26.01.2013).

Bottle at Craig’s tasting 16th Oct 2012
Black, thin tan rim around glass, tan head quickly dissipated
Aroma - dark fruits, berries, some sourness on the nose
Taste - Very fruity sour, blackcurrants, red berries, quite acidic, dark rich malts underneath...bit vinegary...ok initially then got more sour
Palate - medium body, bitter bit roughish roast in the finish and was getting pretty sour
Overall - Hmm -- possibly infected..OK initially - very fruity and drinkable but then got a bit clawing....looking at the other reviews there was probably something wrong with this
