Description
Joseph Holt is a unique brewery: it embodies both traditional values and exceptional brewing. For more than 160 years the company has not only created and developed award winning beer, but also served the community of which it forms a part of. It has built sustainable jobs and worked with charities to deliver substantial benefits to people living in the brewery’s area of operations and beyond.
Established in 1849, Joseph Holt Ltd has been managed by its founding family for five generations. Throughout that time the company has been driven by traditions of professionalism, honesty and innovation. So the business, although rooted in the traditional values of a family firm with a reputation built on traditional draft and bottled beer, has always looked to evolve. The most recent developments in that evolution are the Crystal and Diamond range of lagers and the Golden Ale Two Hoots. These products join the collection of award winning lagers and excellent Smooth and Black keg beer.
The brewery has an established pub estate that is carefully managed to ensure that it is focused on growth.

Dark brown. Faint aroma of chocolate malt, like an alcoholic Milo. Bitter for a mild. Sweetness then kicks in, but bitterness dominates. Unusual. Holt’s best pint in my opinion. Grateful for the reacquaintance.

Dark gold/light brown. Faint, vague, fleeting sweet honey aroma. Bland sweetish sour taste. Basically, there’s not much to this beer. Tastes even weaker than 4%. Not really my cup of tea.

On tap @ Bert’s Bar. Golden to amber with a decent head. There the pleasure ends - it’s got a real oxidised and butterscotch nose and this follows through onto the palate where it also adds an unpleasant astringent malt finish. The palate is thin and still astringent on the finish. Overall, not very good.

Cask on handpump at the Stag & Hounds, Binfield. An attractive bright golden amber colour with a loose translucent head; pleasant pear-drop aroma; pear-drop flavour too with a medium body, some honey, but not too sweet; then a fresh grassy bitterness and a slight sweetening at the end.

500ml clear bottle: BBD of 28 Oct 2013. Shared with the wife on 13 Jun 2013, poured into two ’Palm’ badged bulbous glasses. As the name suggests, this is clear golden in colour, the white head soon became a collar and wisp. Also as the name hints, there is a maple syrup feel to the nose and taste. So fairly sweet from the off: mild hop bite or well carbonated, one or the other? OK, if a little one dimensional. The wife liked it more than me.
