In 2018 zijn we begonnen met De Schieve Rockbrewed. Al duizenden jaren wordt er bier gebrouwen in Europa. Uiteraard werd vroeger het bier niet in sjieke inox of koperen ketels gebrouwen, maar in houten tonnen. Dit houdt natuurlijk in dat je deze tonnen niet zomaar op een houten vuur kan zetten om te maischen en te koken. De techniek die gebruikt werd bestond er in dat een vuur gebouwd werd om hete kasseien, rotsen te verwarmen tot 800 graden. Deze rotsen werden dan op regelmatige basis toegevoegd aan het bier, om zo de temperatuur van het bier te laten stijgen en te laten koken.
Op het einde van het brouwproces werden de rotsen uit het bier gehaald en was het bier klaar om te gisten, steriel en afgekoeld. Brouwerij de Schieve wil deze authentieke manier van brouwen herwaarderen. Resultaat is een bier met een lichte carameltoets die ontstaat doordat de suikers op de hete kasseien neerslaan en verbranden, en een vleugje houtaroma. Voor het vuur worden immers eik of beuken blokken gebruikt

Thanks! Sampled draft @ Modeste 2017. Orange with a big soapy white head. Nose is dull iron, served insanely cold, hurts your hand to hold the glass. Taste is orange peel, chemical soap, metallic but the aftertaste is really awful nail polish remover or some really awful chemical taste which you cannot get out of your mouth, upfront it is still manageable but that aftertaste, really no. Body is nail polish remover & glue. This was honestly sold as a hangover beer, I assume that this aftertaste can sober you up.

75cl bottle courtesy of and shared with Tderoeck. Not sure the light sourness was intended to be described as authentic BE dark ale. Maybe an accidental oud bruin? BBE 12/31/2017. Acajou, col fin blanc-cassé versant sur le jaunâtre. Arôme au nez rendant de suite de fines effluves surettes, rappelant ainsi le cassis, les mûres avec un petit rétro chimique. Fruité aigrelet, avec un effet levure belge restant bien marqué. Palais sur une effervescence très haute, fruité noir, un effet suret perdure rapprochant cette bière plus evrs une vieille brune que une dark BE ale, était-ce là le but recherché? cela en reste cependant correct.

Little cloudy reddish brown beer, creamy beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sourish, infected, nail polish, paint thinner, dirty acidity. MF: soft carbon, light body. Taste: sour start, very chemical and unpleasant bitterness, green apples, bit roasted. Aftertaste: sourish, bit metallic, bitter, more roast, funky, quite some tannins.

Pretty cloudy beige beer, small aery to creamy head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: pretty sourish, infected, bit lemony, yeast, slightly fruity. MF: very lively carbon, medium to light body. Taste: sourish, lemony, infected, some fruity notes, lemon peel, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: bread yeast, some peach, bit sourish, fruity touch.

The third beer from this new micro brewery, after a tripel and an amber ale; all their beers have labels from unlikely materials, in this case leather, and are served in glasses with a crooked stem. Dense and thickly lacing, egg-white, stable head over a misty bronze coloured beer. Aroma has quite some DMS (cooked green cabbage) apart from cloves, tea leaves, caramel, chicken broth, coriander, nutmeg, fried egg. ’Overripe fruit esters’ in the onset, sweet with hints of banana, medlar and raisin, caramelly malt base with medium carbonation, chicken soup-like umami accent, strong spicy notes, light herbal hop bitterness in the finish with strong retronasal, nutmeg-like spiciness and, unexpectedly, quite a lot of coriander. The packing is more impressive than the beer itself: a bit messy, some off-flavours, overspiced and lacking finesse, at least at this early stage.
