Bottle picked up from somewhere in the Netherlands, consumed at home Thursday 8th November 2018 whilst a homemade Ndjua Shepherds Pie warms up in the oven Pours black, shark eye black, never took any notice of the head. Some sticky dark fruit combines with the Bourbon, it's a bit sweet but bitter molasses and a pleasant roastiness show. The barrel ageing is good as its not overpowering good impy. One of several variants of Hilldevils' Woody Wall of Death, a series of oak aged DIPAs; at Just Beer, thanks Ama Deke for sharing. Open, medium thick, moussy, egg-white ring of a head over hazy ochre-tinged brownish amber robe. Aroma of caramel liqueur, honey, abbey cheese, dried apricots, light wet oak wood with subtle vanilla-ish touch, bourbon, calvados, dried apple peel, bread crust. Fruity onset, dried apricot, apple wine, peach, softish carb, slick and full mouthfeel, tad vinous, sweetish caramelly and biscuity maltiness with light sourish edge, bready, with a dash of vanilla-ish oak and warming bourbon-like alcohol in the finish as well as some cheese rind-like and lightly zesty hops, but everything remains quite clean and straightforward with the hops being reduced to a shade of themselves. More a light barleywine style ale than a DIPA; too bad, as barrel aged DIPAs can be exquisite if you can take some old hop cheesiness, but then the best ones are those that are again dry-hopped after the wood treatment - and aged on actual barrels rather than oak chips, of course. Hilldevils is often hit or miss but it demands respect that they have the guts to wildly experiment with wood as an extra ingredient and every now and then, something remarkable comes out of that; this is a fine and highly profiled beer for sure, but I have a feeling it could have been so much more.

Fles gedeelt met Benzai. Het is een troebel amberkleurig bier met een volle witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een hoppige wat boterachtige geur. De smaak is hoppig en harsig.

Bitterish, lots of bourbon, not much hoppyness. Definitely tasty, but basically just bitter bourbon taste, but lighter.

Bottle picked up from somewhere in the Netherlands, consumed at home Saturday 13th September 2018 whilst cooking a proper authentic Spaghetti Carbonara with Homemade Potted Crab (starter) Ok so hands up we never made the Crab thing, but the pasta Carbonara was great. Back to the beer, this is a great beer, a tinge of unripe dark fruit allied with the Bourbon, its a lovely combination. A touch of sweet but bitter molasses, good. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8
