Um 1271 braute man im Spital das Bier aus Gerste und Hafer, ging aber bereits im 14. Jahrhundert, zur Zeit Ludwigs des Bayern, zur alleinigen Verwendung von Gerste, Hopfen und Wasser über - so ist es aus den alten Schriften zu lesen.
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beriet das Aufsichtsgremium des Katharinenspitals, der Spitalrat, die Verlegung und Erweiterung der Spitalbrauerei. Das Spital erwarb den Schambeck´schen Keller in Steinweg sowie später noch zusätzlich zur Verlagerung von Brauhaus und Wirtschaft das Strasser´schen Bräuhaus in Stadtamhof mit dem zugehörigen Sommerbierkeller in Steinweg - der heutigen Spitalgaststätte "Spitalkeller".
Die komplette Verlegung der Brauerei wurde schlussendlich nicht durchgeführt; stattdessen erfolgte auf dem heutigen Gelände ein zusätzlicher Neubau. Eine kleine, alte, sture Brauerei an der Donau...

Bottle. Sweet milky barley malt aroma. Pale yellow color with small head. Lightly sweet creamy barley malt and bitter grass hops flavor. Nice, solid Helles.

Bottle. Pineapple/banana, clove and wheat malt aroma. Cloudy amber color with moderate head. Mildly sweet pineapple/banana and wheat malt flavor with a mildly bitter clove finish. Nice fruity weizen - I’m partial to the pineapple.

Bottle. Sweet caramel malt aroma. Clear amber color with large tan head and moderate effervescence. Sweet caramel malt and moderately bitter weedy hops flavor. Unique - a nice beer.

Bottle 50cl.Hazy light to medium yellow color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white head. Aroma is light malty, wheat, moderate yeasty, citrus, coriander notes. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration. Body is medium to light, texture is watery - creamy, carbonation is soft. [20091003]

Bottle 330ml.Clear light to medium amber color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, tea, light nutty, light to moderate hoppy, flowers. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20091002]

Bottle @ German Tasting Ulfborg. Pours cloudy yellow with a creamy white head. Banana, wheat and citrus. Lively carbonation. Medium to watery body.

Cloudy yellow with a big white head. Fruity aroma with a little banana and some lemon. Fruity and refreshing flavour with lemon notes.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a cloudy yellow with a huge white head. Citric aroma with some yeast and spiciness. Medium body, sweet, discreet banana accents with some yeast and spices. Ends dry. 031009

Bottled (thanks fonefan!). Deep ruby colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is fudge, some roasted notes as well as mild wooden notes. Flavour is caramel, wood, some mild soap as well as liquorice.
