Pours a beautiful deep brown with piles of creamy off-white beige head. This is some of the creamiest best tasting rich head. Aroma is pure coffee and roasted barley. Digging in, it was immensely roasty, syrupy, slightly chewy and flat. Big medium roast coffee flavors, and a wonderful black licorice flavor on the finish. Some grainy alcohol notes and a mild bitterness. Served at a great temperature. Unfortunately, it got slightly thin at the end, and it didnt have quite the complexity of Samuel Smiths. No winey/porty/prune notes.

Pretty good lager, clean and slightly peachy on the finish. Aroma is mildly hopped, not very strong. Dark yellow, light bodied. Fairly sweet but not much in the way of sourness/zing to it that I'd like from a lager.

2003 6.5% ABV Version. Initially is almost black, but as it settles, clears up a good amount and becomes a brighter mahogany. Good amount of off-white head. Very sweet, with less roastiness than I would expect on the finish. Lots of chocolate velvet flavor. Quite rich and smooth. Good stuff, but not quite the best of style, but well made anyhow. Very even slight roast aroma, with a touch of hops.

Caramel and toffee? I don't think so. It was pretty thin bodied, and sort of tasted like I was drinking cola without the sugar added. A slight hop bitterness in the finish reminded me that it was beer. Not terrible, but still somewhat bland.

This stacks up to the great pale ales in every respect. Substaintial body heavy with sweet malts and a nice hop bite. Like candy with hops.

Opaque appearance, but the head looks like soap suds. This reduces to a nice lacing, though. Oatmeal and roasted malts in the aroma. Flavor is heavy with chocolate and coffee. Creamy mouthfeel. Lingering coffee in the finish with a slight hop bite. A fine specimen.

Reeeaaalllyyy smooth. I mean, thick, creamy - the flavours are pretty good, and well-structured, but the fat, natural body is what makes this one of the better oatmeal stouts around. There aren't a lot of great beers in NYC, but this is prime stuff.
