Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. Received this in trade from jtrockchalk, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a solid black with a stingy tan head that dissipates quickly leaving no trace that it was ever there. Smells of chocolate syrup, roasted grains, some dried fruit and a touch of alcohol. Taste is of milk and dark chocolate mixed with some alcohol and roast. Body is thick, carbonation low but ample, mouthfeel is a cross between creamy and oily. Good Imp Stout. Still a little alcohol hot, but tasty just the same. I wish I had more to lay down for a year or two because I bet this would be spectacular with some age.

12 oz bottle sent to me by Suttree. Pour is a clear golden with a pure white one inch head that falls with nice lacing. Aroma is fresh hops, dank resinous citrus along with some toasty malt underneath. Not huge, bang you over the head hops, but nicely delicate and fresh. Taste, like the nose, starts with the fresh hops; floral, resin and orange peel. The malt shows up in the finish, and is toasty and flinty. The finish is dry with a dusty earthiness. As with the nose, fresh and crisp. Palate is thin bodied, with a mouthfeel that approaches watery. The thin body makes the hops a bit oily in the aftertaste. Overall, nice crisp fresh drinkable beer. I could drink a few of these in a session. Thanks for this one Phil.

Received in trade from limesmut and mikesgroove, thanks for the opportunity guys. Pours a deep amber color with a nice size dirty white head that stick around a bit and laces the glass all the way down. Aroma is caramel malty with some citrusy hops in there as well. I smell loads of caramel and some mineral in the background. Tastes malty, caramel and hops round it out nicely. Maybe a touch sweet. Mouthfeel is quite creamy, medium body that finishes quite dry but lingers with bitterness in the finish. Decent brew for an American amber, I’m not sure what makes it a Gaelic Ale though. There are better brews out there, but this one is pretty good, I’d drink one if it was offered to me.

Originally rated June 2010. Purchased in Nashville, TN on a trip there. Pours a rich golden colour with a big off-white frothy-creamy head and full lacing. Great retention and tiny bubble light carbonation. Beautiful hop scent and medium-bodied. Sweet tasting with a little bitter finish. Not as hoppy as some American IPA I have tried from micros, but better than wannabe macros. Right in between IPA and well-balanced.

Big black presentation for a pour. No head, and it just smells plain beery with a black coffee background. Big stout first taste impressions. Coffee backbone of course. Coffee expresso session. Barely any detectable CO2 but what is there is a little creamy fer sure. taste is not bad for a heavy coffee beer. Finish is much less than imperial and is nearly enjoyable Coffee effect is really an eye opener! Overall decent coffee experience but I think its because my daughter has been working at starbucks and I’m just getting used to it.

Looks like pale lager. Has a scummy pond head. No visible signs of CO2. Interesting plastic aroma, almost artificial, like a bandaid. Quite dull IPA feel. Moves on to IPA taste territory during the session.Very odd beer experience. Medicinal and sterile.

Cloudy orange - amber beer. Rich silky palate. A little pepper rides over a marmaladey orange and grapefruit hop. The hops are deep but also mellow and not over bitter. Long smooth hop finish with a lingering but pleasant bitterness.

Had on tap @ Carolina Ale house in Columbia, SC. The bartender couldn’t describe what type of beer this was. I was nicely surprised. Nice amber color, with thick frothy head that didn’t last to long but did and some lacing. Nice hop taste up front but was smooth out by a malty finish. I well done amber ale.
