Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

Weak coffee aroma. Black pour with a medium tan head, good lacing. Dark roasted malt, some charcoal. Subtle blueberry and dark chocolate finish. Didn’t get a lot of mocha, which is disappointing, but it still tastes pretty good.

22 ounce bottle. I’m a homebrew fan and a kolsch fan and an Asheville beer fan, so its fun to try this one. This pours a clear golden color with a a thin white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of grainy malts with a bit of toastiness along with the faintest herbal hoppiness. The taste is toasted malts, faint caramel, floral and fruity notes and just a touch of grass in the finish. Medium bodied. Crisp and clean, well balanced. Low carbonation. Very nice beer. Well done Brandon Dana and Highland.

Bomber from Bruisin Ales. Pours copper with a one finger foamy off-white head. Aromas of roast malt and kandi. Med maybe body with mild carbonation. Flavor is roast malt, and kandi, and a touch of yeast/spice. Certainly Belgian, and not of light flavor, but somehow it seems a combo of dubbel and tripel. On the other hand it drinks quite well.

Pour is a clear blond with a small white head. Aroma is a bit of dry malts and not much else. Flavor is an excellent pils malt followed by a nice grassy hop. Finish leaves a dry malt on the tounge. This is a style I’m not fond of but this is a pretty strong example of the style.

Sample at Flying Saucer in Nashville. This brew is a clear pale orange color with a medium foamy beige head that lasts awhile. Sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus and tropical fruits, along with hops. Medium body with flavors of citrusy hops and malt, plus some floral and piney notes. The finish is mildly hoppy with a citrus aftertaste. Decent overall.
