Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

Tap at Trappeze in Athens. Pours amber with tan head. Aroma is very sweet, sugary and almost gives this nice syrupy. Taste, amazing, nice caramel malts and chocolate with notes of fruits and licorice which gives a very sweet mouthfeel with faint touch of spices and cinnamon. Finish is lightly hoppy. Thick on the palate leaving a fruity & syrupy aftertaste.

This was really nice, I was very impressed. Deep ruby chestnut, moderate head. Aroma is malt forward but not heavy, with notes of chocolate and berries/cherries. Flavor is similar but also very biscuity, cookieish. Like christmas sugar cookies, or barely a hint of gingerbread cookie and thats the only spice I got in this. Light balancing hop in the finish. Soft palate, with a nice light carbonation.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Suttree. Pour is clear golden amber with a one inch dirty white head. Visible carbonation bubbles. Aroma of slightly burnt toasted malt. A bit of a soapy smell behind that. Taste is the toasty malt with a hay grassines. There is also a citrus bitterness to the finish which is noce, though surprised me a bit. Palate has carbonation and is on the thin watery side. As this warmed, it really came into its own. Nice layers of flavor to this one, along with good drinkability. Thanks Phil.

2008 Bottle thanks to mar. Pours with a light brown head that fades and a black body. Aroma of chocolate, mocha and lots of alcohol. Taste is mocha, and some dark roast. Slightly fizzier than I would like, but a creamy mouthfeel. Would age well.

Beer tasted at mcbackus tasting courtesy of Beerlando. Pours deep darkness with infra red edges and thin mocha head. The aroma has various levels and notes of roasted malts, earthiness, a hint of smoke, coffee and a bit of nuttiness. Smells great. The taste is full boldness with all the notes noticed in the nose bringing in mildly roasted malts to highly roasted malts, solid earthiness, some smoke to impugn interest and a bit of coffee and almond nuttiness. The notes are pretty bright but maybe right on the money for the experience. Really enjoyable.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a large, fluffy, light brown heead and a hazy amber body. Good retention and lacing. Aroma is malty and a bit peety...Very sweet with some dark fruits. Taste is malty, sweet with some dark fruits and cereal. Its also a bit husky with a bit of alcohol uncovered in the finish. Somewhat warming for a 5.8% beer, water like mouthfeel with tingly little bubbles.

12 ounce bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop. A more vigorous pour than anticipated creates a bubbly 2-finger head on top of a clear orange-amber. Nice lacing. Aroma is faint, but a pleasant sweet malts and citrus hops. The taste is very similar, citrus hops with sweet slightly grainy malts. Very well balanced and medium to full bodied.
