Disappointing. This beer is light in flavor, aroma, and body. Black and medium carbonation. A hint of coffee. Thin and boring. ------------Re-rate 1/12/07 Much better. Pleasant chocolate aroma, some coffee. Thicker and heavier than I remembered. Served cool but not cold, very smooth palate.

Bottle. Dark chocolate and molasses malt aroma. Dark brown color with small head. Strong chocolate malt flavor with a slight burnt grain and hops finish. Nice full palate which is closer to a stout in mouthfeel. A great porter.

Pours a sparkling clear dark garnet with a small fleeting head. Fruity aroma gives off grape and honeydew melon. The flavor starts with a grape candy sweetness, a slight bitterness comes in as it fades to a dry finish. I didn’t get and of the vanilla that others have noted, I’ll look for it when I try another one of these.

2005 bottle from Suttree, consumed on 12/17/2005. Lots of sediment on the bottom. Plenty of carbonation rises through a copper-golden, highly polished brass body. White head immediately dissipates to a ring.. Dry cascade nose, leafy and grapefruity with soft flowers and light pale malts. Touch of apple and hay in the nose too. Almost like there are a goldings in the boil too, or just stale cascades. . .
Flavor is fruity (peaches, apples, apricots) with light citrus blending in to the mix while a lightly sweet pale malt sugariness soflty balances. Light hop bitterness grows and then clears with the help of a lightly spritzy, but fairly tight carbonation. Texture is smooth, minimal filtration effects and fairly substantial despite the fact that the malt only gives a medium body overall. Apples, pears and lemons linger on the fniish. Little to no yeast apparency, no alcohol apparency. Second half of the bottle adds more sugars, less hops and, with the carbonation settling out, provides for a very delicate and drinkable experience. Yeast plays little to no role in the flavor, but adds a light chewiness to the texture. Retro grapefruit and minor yeastiness (b-vitamins).

Milwaukee YEHa!05, one I brought along (thanks for the trade, beeryum!). Dark chocolate-brown body, thin beige/light tan head. Toasty, chocolatey aroma, with definite roasted malt character. Dark fruit appears in the body (cherries, berries?), in addition to heavy toasts, chocolate, and roasted malts. Just the right touch of sweetness, reminding me in some ways of Bells Double Cream Stout (a favorite). A very good Scotch Ale, and it is a departure, but a very good one.

This is dark brown, almost black, as dark as most Porters. Tall creamy head. Sweet rich malty raisiny aroma. Smooth and creamy , with a flavor profile that follows the malty sweetness found in the aroma. A nice brew!

2005 bottle huge thanks to Beeryum for the bonus. Sampled on 11/6/05 with the Montreal Crew. Dark sandy to mahogany browns swirl about against a deep chocolate brown backdrop. Clear and filtered, however, with a small beige head, low to moderate retention, no lacing. Easy to get along with coffee nose, has a light mocha and cream suggestion to it, a touch of sweet graham crackers and milk chocolate. Aroma somehow comes across as lightly watery, not sure how to explain that, the aroma sort of wavers in and out, not very strongly, with light compost notes and some dry, bland, vapid notes. Flavor has a chocolate atop biscuits note to start, sugary and with a hint of toasted grains. Sweet toffee and low hops (touch of floral, green flavor) with more graininess (almost a bland, sandiness) on the end. Lightly bitter black chocolate and roast notes come in to play. The mouthfeel has a forced carbonation prickliness, but nowhere near the level of some of the bigger offenders. Medium body, touch of wateriness on the end.

Bottle Pours a clear redish amber with a very modest off white head. Subtel slightly roasted malt aroma and little in thy of hops is evident. Pleasant woody malt flavor, still very little hops. Moderate palate and fairly fizzy. lacking any real bitterness and while plain and unexciting, a nice easy drinking brew. Wish I could say as good for the picture on this page.

Cloudy light amber colour. Dull earthy aroma. Light body for style, with hints of caramel and toffee. There are some fresh fruity notes to keep things at least a little bit lively but this beer is pretty bland.

Hazy amber colour. Caramelly, earthy aroma with light esters. Chewy caramel malts. That’s about it, really. Fairly earthy but really simple beer.
