750ml bottle. Clear, redd-ish, dark amber colour with small to average, frothy, rapidly diminishing, white head. Fruity, minimally funky aroma, notes of sweet cherry, sherry, marsala, a touch of nutmeg, lemon peel. Taste is tart-ish, fruity, mildly tangy, minimally vinous and woody, notes of cherry, sherry, marsala, a touch of nutmeg, black pepper, lemon peel, subtle fruity sweetness. Watery texture, super-soft, smooth, silky palate, very fine, soft carbonation. Quite mild, almost a bit cautious, excellent mouthfeel - very nice.

Slightly unclear medium golden colour, small frothy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma pale malt, apple, yeast, light caramel. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, sourish notes, malty, grain, apple, light caramel. Sweetbitter aftertaste, light sourish undertone, some sugar, herbal notes, papery bits in the end. Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation, kind of boorish beer but nice.

About 40 years old, as old as I am! Bought in 1987 in Amsterdam when a beer shop in Amsterdam had bought some old stock from the brewery. Light pink colored, still a bit of carbon left. Very vinous, cherry aroma. Thin, off course, after all those years. Cherry and tartness in the taste. Metal. Aftertaste of rubber tires. Still very drinkable. I have added some overall points because the beer has aged so well. Re-rate: Fairly recent beer. Pinkish orange color, no head. Cherry and oak aroma. Odd mix of cherry, caramel and hops. Just a hint of tartness. Very likeable and fairly complex beer. The cherries aren't overwhleming, but are just a part of the flavor of this great beer. Recommended. Re-rate Bought at the Crombé brewery, at september 1th, 2004. Intriguing cherry and cherry pits aroma. Pinkish red color. Sweetish, somewhat tart cherry flavor. Hops are also present. Thin, but tasty. I love this beer, but is it Crombé old, Crombé new or Strubbe????

Strong hoparoma. Bit of citrus. Hoppy taste, just a bit tart. Caramel and citrus. Must be a few years old, but carries the years with dignity. Excellent beer!

Brewed by Crombé: aroma has grapefruit and hops. Very hoppy taste. A bit tart. Loads of citrus. Long bitter finish. See above rating. Brewed by Strubbe (?), bought at Crombé Brewery, best until june '06. If Strubbe brewed this beer, they did a good job. Hoppy aroma, very hoppy flavor with a hint of lemon. Hoppy aftertaste, prickly mouthfeel. Lacks complexity compared to a cellared Crombé beer, but it surely has quality. 7 3 8 5 15 = 3.8

A few years old. Grapefruit and hops in the aroma. Loads of hops and citrus in the taste. Just a bit yeasty and tart. Bit thin. Excellent and delicious light Belgian ale.

Crombe version: Hops and citrus in the aroma, but not as sharp as might be expected. Some maltiness. Also malt, hops and citrus in the flavor. Some caramel. Alcohol well hidden. The beer must be a few years old, but has developed well and is still full of life. Long hoppy finish. What a nice beer to finish the day with! Strubbe version: amber color, clear. Hoppy, dusty, citric aroma. and flavor, with a dry out effect in the throat. Hoppy, citric aftertaste with a hint of metal. Loveable beer that lacks some character compared to the ancient Crombe stuff 7 3 8 4 14 = 3.6

Orange color. Some hops, citrus and caramel in the aroma. Sweetish, hoppy caramelly citric flavor. Earthy with hints of red berries. Just a bit tart. Some alcohol and rubber. Hopbitter, citric aftertaste. Prickly mouthfeel. Lovely typical Crombé ale.

Hoppy, cheesy aroma. Hoppy grapefruit flavor with some caramel. Tart and very tasty beer. probably a few years old. The oily hoppiness is partly replaced by a citric fruitiness. Long, hoppy citric finish. Good beer! Strubbe version: Oud Zottegems 6,5%. Light orange color, no head, low on carbon. Fine hoppy flavor. Nice ale, but what has happened to the once great Oud Zottegems from Crombé. I celebrated my high school diploma (in 1980, mind you) with a large bottle of this beer. This Strubbe version lacks power, aroma, flavor and complexity. 6 2 7 4 13 = 3.2 Oud Zottegems bier hergist 6,8% Strubbe version. Hoppy, slightly citric aroma. Raw hoppy flavor with hints of flowers and citrus. There is of course a strong family bond between Oud Zottegems and Oud Zottegems hergist, but there are lightyears of difference between those beers. The hergist version is hoppier, tastier and more complex. IMO these are different beers! 7 3 7 4 14 = 3.5
