Hoppy, cheesy aroma. Hoppy grapefruit flavor with some caramel. Tart and very tasty beer. probably a few years old. The oily hoppiness is partly replaced by a citric fruitiness. Long, hoppy citric finish. Good beer! Strubbe version: Oud Zottegems 6,5%. Light orange color, no head, low on carbon. Fine hoppy flavor. Nice ale, but what has happened to the once great Oud Zottegems from Crombé. I celebrated my high school diploma (in 1980, mind you) with a large bottle of this beer. This Strubbe version lacks power, aroma, flavor and complexity. 6 2 7 4 13 = 3.2 Oud Zottegems bier hergist 6,8% Strubbe version. Hoppy, slightly citric aroma. Raw hoppy flavor with hints of flowers and citrus. There is of course a strong family bond between Oud Zottegems and Oud Zottegems hergist, but there are lightyears of difference between those beers. The hergist version is hoppier, tastier and more complex. IMO these are different beers! 7 3 7 4 14 = 3.5

@ Alkeveld, Velzeke. Hazy amber colour, white foam. Nose of caramel, bready, malty. Reminds me of a special belge with a very malty (almost like a British bitter) character.

Gekocht op 16-08-2018 bij Dranken Geers in Oostakker. En thuis geproefd op 1-12-2018. Zottegemse Grand Cru is een helder en amber-kleurig biertje dat bij het uitschenken zeer veel gebroken wit schuim produceert met een dik-wollige structuur. Het blijft sterk aan de glaswand kleven en blijft redelijk stabiel, er wordt redelijk snel een ‘bergje’ gemaakt bovenop het schuim. Slechts weinig CO2 pareling gezien met fijne belletjes. Het aroma van Zottegemse Grand Cru is een beetje zurig, wat karamelzoet, gistbitter, wat banaan en citrus en wat karamelmout. De smaak is zoetig, met suiker en een kruidige toets. In de mond geeft Zottegemse Grand Cru een volle body gevoel en is hij normaal koolzuurgas-prikkelend. Een Harmonieus biertje. De nasmaak vloeit lang uit en is vooral wat hopbitterig met ook een kruidentoets en op het laatst een licht droogje. 330ml bottle from Dranken Geers. Pours a reddish amber, small off-white head. Soft cherry, funky sour nose. Fairly light on the palate, soft cherry presence, mild acetic character, light sourness. Good table kriek but lacking the depth of flavours I was expecting.

Bottle at home (6.0%). Clear rusty orangey amber, thin white head. Sour cherries, cane sugar, brown sugar, faro, hazel and almond nutty, fruitstone, balsamic. Quite vinagrous acidic and heavy sugary sweetness bashing into it. Balances out in favour of the battery acid. Brilliant white creamy head stayed well on a finely carbonating light golden body. Dry fruity aroma with citrus hints. Medium bodied, light & airy in the mouth with a slight tingle on the back & a clean, dry aft. Berries, spice, Belgian yeast & herb tastes - not too sweet.

75cl bottle from Sandersput, Ninove. Paired with the first BBQ of the year. Shared with Anke.
Pours clear dark golden to amber with a quickly dissipating, foamy, off-white head. Subtle aroma of apple, yeast, caramel, bready malt, red fruit, some nuts. It tastes medium malty sweet and light spicy bitter, some very light fruity sour tones. Bready, yeasty, dry, bit herbal finish, but quenching. Light to medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. I can appreciate this.
