Description
As the name suggests is Villers-devant-Orval a charming little village opposite Orval Abbey and Brewery. It was there that the history and legend of Saint Gengoulf led to the birth of the Gengoulf brewery and its craft beers. In 2011, four friends (André Odwa, Vincent Habran, Olivier Tarnus and Marc Hisette) decided to brew their own beer, which was slightly softer than that of the neighbors of Orval, and which their wives would also enjoy because they did not like the bitterness of Orval and in 2013 the brewery was actually established.

Bottle from a Carrefour. Pours hazy ochre with a lasting, frothy, white head. Aroma of rhubarb, flowers, green apple, gooseberries, soap, white tea, cheese, lactic acid. Taste is light to medium fruity sour, hinting at gooseberries, lemon, quite soapy, wheaty perhaps, with sweetish apple & pear. Underneath there is a bitter herbal impression, tea-like, some earthy spices & yeast. Dryish, bit tart, grassy hoppy finish, weirdly funky & herbal. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Weird mix, and not that tasty.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, yellow-ish, golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Yeasty spicy and yeasty fruity aroma, hints of apricot, mirabelle, sparkling wine, a touch of white pepper. Taste is dry, minimally vinous, yeasty fruity and yeasty spicy, hints of apricot, mirabelle, a touch of sparkling wine again, the lively to fizzy carbonation fortifies that brut impression. Overcarbonated.

Bottle from Carrefour in Ghent. Pours cloudy yellow with a big, slowly thinning, frothy, unstable, off-white head; some lacing & sediment. Aroma of sour milk, matured cheese, gooseberries, hay, green banana, unripe apricot, apple peel, yeast, sourdough. Taste is light to medium funky sour, some unripe apricot & wheat but aspects of sourdough & expired yoghurt gain strength, bit lactic too; fruity notes of apple & banana; somewhat grassy & spicy bitter. Dry, grassy hoppy finish, bit spicy & grainy, lingering wheaty tartness, lactic, apple, but the funky character remains. Medium body, slick/watery texture, lively carbonation (numbing!). Something went wrong here (infection?), or, if intended, it's not my style at all!

Flower beer flavoured with roselle, a Hibiscus species best known for its fibres but also as a red food colorant and as the dried red flowers sometimes added to e.g. a glass of champagne as a gimmick. Bottle shared by tderoeck. Irregularly shaped, snow white, lacing, stable head, misty peach blonde robe with salmon pink tinge clearly established by the roselle. Aroma of a whole lot of roselle, perfumey and plasticky even, but also suffering from an unpleasant sulfuric effect often associated with clumsy use of plant materials in beer; other impressions include chalk, red apple, soap, iron, melon, banana. Sweet, basic Belgian fruity profile (banana and apple) heavily drenched in an overdose of roselle; medium carbonated, soapy, grainy basis, but the roselle adds so much soapiness, plasticky and perfumey sweet effects that it dominates the entire beer till deep in the finish; some dimly lime-like sourishness too. I never liked Hibiscus flower beverages so this was never going to be my cup of tea, but other than that, this is at the very best a thin and bland Belgian ale suffering from an overdose of roselle, causing a bunch of unpleasant plasticky, sulfuric and soapy-perfumey flavours which I cannot appreciate at all.

19/VII/18 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared with Alengrin @ Belgian Ticks Tasting (home) - BB: a big smudge of ink that should represent a date (2018-855)

Clear copper orange to peach pink beer, small creamy white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: metallic, little floral, some red lace candy, bit dirty, rubbery. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bad, floral, rubbery, burnt plastic, bit fruity, very unpleasant. Aftertaste: pretty bad, chemical stuff, plastic and burnt rubber, don't like it at all!
