Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Ruby colour, not much head. Aroma is raisins, hops, caramel malts, alcohol and excellent balance. Flavour is raisins, very sweet alcohol, smooth stuff and dark dry fruits. Marvellous balance. WOW

9.3 ounce bottle from Plaza Liquors in Johnson City, TN. Corked, and the cork was dead beyond all comprehension. Pours a clear red color with sawdust floaties. Aroma of caramel, toffee, whisky, dark fruits. Taste is toffee, dark fruits, wood, whisky. Slightly tart note. Medium bodied. Eh.

Bottle. 2001 Vintage. Mahogony beer with no head. Sherry, malt, and light caramel aroma. Sherry, malt, and an earthy flavor. Medium-light bodied. No carbonation. Sherry, malt, and earth lingers. If you don’t like it - it was much better with a little Laphroaig added.

Bottle at European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. A clear, brown beer without head. Oxidation, some caramel, alcohol and dried fruits in the aroma. The flavor has some sweetness, caramel and oxidation, leading to a lasting finish with caramel and oxidation. Warming, full-bodied and flat. A nice one, but still not there. I like English beers like this one, but it somehow disappointed a bit. (080913

Bottled (from รlkonsortiet, Aalborg). Amber colour, no head. Aroma is raisins, alcohol, some sap a bit sherrylike stinging. Flavour is very dry madeiralike with mild raisiny sweetness. Some wooden notes lurking in the background too. As it warms up also some llicorice and alcohol start showing in the flavour. A bit caramelly finish along with some smooth alcohol.

(Bottled 275ml). Clear amber color, floating yeast particles, no head. Sherry-like, fruity, rose berry aroma. Sweetish, very Madeira/sherry-lke flavor. Light licorice in the finish with backing alcohol and toffee. Outstanding balance. Seems that whole bunch of raters have sampled a bad bottle. What a shame.

Sampled from a 9.3 oz corked brown bottle this beer poured a hazy medium brown color with a trace of a khaki head. The aroma was light sweet caramel, molasses and nut. The flavor was tangy and a touch sour with notes of nut, molasses, caramel, port wine, baker chocolate, wood and a hint of fruit. Very complex and interesting but also over the top intense such that it was not particularly drinkable. The mouthfeel was flat and moderately thick. Very interesting.

’05 bottle Pours dark brown, no head. Aroma soja, malty, get some fruity and barel notes. Taste of soja, oaky with some nice fruity presence (apple) giving the beer a bourbon aspect (Calvados in this case). There isn’t much nice about the visual aspect of the beer, it is just too bad that there is close to no carbonation.

Many thanks to Craig for this beer, bloody marvellous beer, cheers mate! Pours possibly dark ruby in colour, but poured in near darkness outside the camper in a field so difficult to be exact on that one, the head disappeared quickly. This is a real king amongst English beers, in fact I would say world class. I’ve had it before when it was in the old corked bottles and enjoyed it but didn’t realise just how damn good this was. First taste combines toffee, with a nice woody sourness, apple skins, sticky molassess, dark plums, prunes, really stunning. I can’t be arsed to write anymore I just want to drink this, cheers Craig you’re a star. I reckon that this may get even better with some age on it but I’m not sure that I could resist the temptation to keep cracking them open.
