Description
St. Peter's is an independent brewery founded in 1996 by John Murphy in former agricultural buildings adjacent to St. Peter’s Hall in St Peter, South Elmham, near Bungay, Suffolk, England. Siting the brewery at St. Peter’s was ideal because of the excellent water quality from our own deep bore-hole. Locally malted barley is used, together with Kentish hops, to produce a range of classical beers (bitters, mild etc.) as well as some more unusual beers such as honey porter and fruit beer.

Fun fact: The oval shape of its signatory 500 ml bottle is based on an 18th-century gin bottle from Gibbstown, by the Delaware River near Philadelphia, USA.

Cask at Lodge, Alsager. Pours “bitter brown” with a small scummy off-white head and excellent lacing. There’s rich tea biscuits and tangerines in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with some underlying bitterness. Malts and floral hops dominate the flavour but there’s also caramel and hints of citrus and dried fruit. Traces of spice and herbs come through later as well. Finish is fruity and quite dry. This is a decent old school bitter.

0.5 l bottle from 'Brauart', best before April 2026. Clear, deep ruby with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, gently fruity and a little herbal-spicy aroma of orange jam, strawberry, toffee and a touch of gingerbread. Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, gently fruity and a little herbal-spicy taste of orange jam, strawberry, plum, cinnamon, gingerbread, some toffee and traces of chocolate, followed by a short, moderately bitter, minimally dry finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Pleasant Christmas ale, moreish and saturating, very well-balanced.

January 2022: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.7%. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Very moderate aroma, weak notes of hops and grain, hints of toffee and biscuits. The flavour has decent hops on a slightly sweet base of moderate malts, with a hint of caramel. Distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Not a bad beer, but far from the best offering from St. Peter’s.
