[Cask at Monks Retreat, Reading] Deep gold, thick white head. Faintly sulphurous aroma made me dread it, but fortunately on tasting it was rather intriguing. Sweet vanilla and butterscotch are mixed with hints of sulphur, before a growing and drawn-out crisp bitterness takes over, leaving a dry finish. Even through this you still get enticing sweet notes. You can see how it’s been given the Burton name. It’s an interesting beer, although possibly not one I’d choose too often.

Cask, handpump at The Kings Head, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, 24-04-10 Pours warm gold with a thin white head. The aroma is lacking but this is a very smooth straightforward and pleasant beer. There is an edge of earthy hop, its tasty stuff. A6 A4 F7 P4 Ov13 3.4

Cask-conditioned at George’s Meeting House (JDW), Exeter 19/04/10. Deep gold in colour with a decent white head. Aroma of sweet cereals and grassy hops. Flavours of sweetish malts, decent, almost spicy hops and a long, bitter finish. Enjoyable.

Cask, handpump at The Penny Black, JDW, Bicester, Oxon, 18-04-10 Pours gold in colour. This is really quite citric, bit pithy in mouth even. Quite refreshing stuff, with a nicely weighted sweetness, some citrus on tip of tongue, touch dry. Nice, btw Tonto wasn’t a fan of this, when I told her I really liked it, she uttered some American Indian phrase that I took to mean unbelieveable. A6 A5 F7 P4 Ov13 3.5

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Gold, lasting thin white head. OK, nothing wrong with it. OK golden ale. Some ok hop sting on the end. Just a little thin on the body but otherwise perfectly ok. Some yeast on aroma, but want to get back to the Daleside Spring as the condition was so good.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Amber with a dense cream head; sweet aroma; biscuity malt flavours; slight sour bitter finish. Nothing out of the ordinary.
