Cask at the Tilly Shilling (JDW), Farnborough. An opaque black pour with a tight tan head; sweet tarry aroma; rather thin in the mouth, but a stunning combination of coal tar and blackcurrant cordial; then a dry finish that delivers a subtle warmth. A really good stout.

Cask @ Paramount, Manchester. Black with a creamy off-white head. Roasted malts are more than evident in its nose. It’s fairly understated in its taste though, although as its crisp and smooth it does slip down the palate well.

Bottle from B&M Bargains, Manchester. Dark, clear chestnut colour with no head. Traditional ale with a heavier fruity sweetnyin its aroma than taste, but this defines its character.

From cask. Pours cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma is toasted malty and vague spiced. Toasted malty. Light fruity, toasted and light bitter finish.

Cask at the Old Contemptibles; clear straw yellow pour with a bubbly white head, straw aroma, taste has light citrus, bread and honey, with a bitter finish.

Hoop & Grapes, Nicholsons. Cask. Lightly hazy gold beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Generally feels in good condition. Light malts, modest sweetness. Hops are mildly orange citrus and modestly bitter, certainly enough to maintain interest. Light finish. Nicely balanced and prety quaffable and I enjoyed my pint.

Cask at the Haymarket. Pours clear pale gold with a thin white head. Aromas of light citrus, grapefruit and lemon. Taste is light lemon, grapefruit, slightly sweet, bready finish.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - golden with a proportionate head. Nose - grapefruit and orange notes. Taste - more of the same. Very fresh. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - lots of flavour for a light bodied wine.
