Description
Maxim Brewery began full production in Houghton le Spring in 2007.

To brew the best beers possible requires the best brewery equipment available. Our 20 barrel brewery equipment was previously at the Canongate Brewery on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. This was Scottish & Newcastle’s pilot brew house and as you would expect, was built to a very high specification. Indeed, it remains probably the best equipment of its size anywhere in the UK today. Our flexible Brewery with its special Lautering system allows us to brew between 3,000 and 17,000 pints per day and importantly ensures that we can maintain the highest quality and guarantee a regular supply of cask, keg and bottled beers to the drinkers of the North East and beyond.

500ml clear glass bottle from Amble Tesco. Pours dark reddish brown, no head. Strong caramel and toffee on the nose, fruitcake and demerara sugar. Taste is sweet. Light body, watery finish. Not my sort of thing at all.

24th Apr 14, been cutting the lawns, need a refreshing pint: this should do the job. 500ml Bottle: BBD 28th Oct 14, poured into a vase shaped pint glass. Almost lager like in appearance, although the snowy white head was thicker and stayed. Mild citrus in the aroma which became full on in the taste, grapefruit and lemon feel to both the smell and flavours. Refreshing enough, but I’m fed up with golden brews that have a citrus bent and this is smack in the middle of that style. I’ve scored it kindly because it is well made and although it’s not for me I know many others love these type of brew.

Cask at a nicholson’s near Covent Garden. It pours dark ruby with small beige head. The nose is toasty, blueberry, jammy, roasted malt, earth and liquorice. The toasty, earth, mild acidity, roasted malt, dark fruits and jam with a dry, fruity finish. Light-medium body and soft carbonation. A bit weak, but not bad.
